Caithness legion
« on: Friday 18 October 13 22:44 BST (UK) »
Hi  Just found out one of my Church of Ireland ancestors was in the
Caithness legion. The full details i have are from his church marriage record
his name was William Henderson and he married a Elizabeth Foster in 1801. In brackets
was Caithness Legion, above his entry was another for a Captain William McPherson. What
i am wondering is , is it possible to find out about this regiment and his service in it. Also
how could i go about finding his place of birth. Sorry forgot to mention he married in Tullow
      Carlow Ireland. Thanks in advance.
                                                        Colm

I also recently discovered that one of my ancestors is William Henderson of the Caithness Legion who married Eliza Foster in Tullow, and am trying to trace his birthplace.

I found a William Henderson listed in the British Service Registers from 1803, in the 42nd Foot Soldiers, 2nd Battalion, who enlisted in 1800. He was 20 in 1803 and was listed next to an Andrew (?) Henderson, also 20, and was from Thurso, Caithness.

I'm not sure if this is him but please post if you've found anything else.

Hi Dreameregirl
So far i am unable to find any details of his birth. I do know
they stayed in Tullow and i believe was a shoemaker. I have
not found any thing else about his military service YET. If you
need any details of his descendants let me know.

Hi Dreamergirl
In the Church records there is a death for a William Henderson in 1844
aged 64 and Buried on the 19 April, i think there is a 99 per cent that it is our
one. Regarding the military records do you have copies of the records. If you do
would you mind sending me a copy as i would like to see them .
                                                                         Thanks

Hi Collech,

In the British Regimental Register of Service,  42nd Foot Soldiers, 2nd Battalion
1803-1805, I found this info:
Willm Henderson
Age 20, Birth about 1783
Birth: Thurso, Caithness
Military Date:    10 Aug 1803
Unit:    42nd Foot Soldiers, 2nd Battalion

I also found the same death/burial info.

Excited to see if your discharge info matches!

Hi Dreamergirl
Sorry for not replying sooner, you know how things get. Any way
i did not find any William that Matched your records. I did find one from Glenon
Tyrone and one from Thurso but joined the Rathson and Caithness in 1801 in
Belfast and was later in the 44th. I did find discharge papers for Andrew Henderson,
enlisted on the 05/11/1819 in the 42nd Foot which i see is not the same as yours.
Guess we will have to keep looking and hoping. Just wondering which one of William's
children are you descended from. My family is from his son James and his grandson
David had a distinguished career in the East Lancashire Regiment. But who would
have known there were so many William's.

Hi Collech,

No problem about the delay - January can be hectic! With regards to the military record, I am not 100% sure I have the right William, but the info fits quite well with what I know.

I am descended from William through his son William (b. 1805), then through his grandson James Thomas (b. 1828). I didn't know the original William had a son named James. The other children I have are John (b. 1802), Edward (b. 1808) and Jeneton (b. 1811).

Can you post info on James, and if you found other children? Also, I have no background info on Eliza Foster except birth year (1780) and marriage, so that would be useful also.

Thanks so much and let me know if you need any more info on my branch!
