The man who never was ?
« on: Sunday 27 October 13 20:07 GMT (UK) »
Hello,
Recently, I was carrying out some research regarding the occupants of a certain property in Lancashire. The street directory for 1914 had the occupant as E H Obrien, no gender, no occupation. Marital status also unknown. The property, which must remain anonymous, is prestigious, suggesting that E H Obrien was well placed in society. I am unable to find any trace of E H Obrien in previous census returns, obviously, he/ she moved to this address post 1911. Trawling through every BMD has produced absolutely nothing, this person is a complete mystery. Could the street directory be incorrect ?, did the First World War have anything to do with his disappearance? Who was he, and did he actually exist?
Any help would be gratefully received

                                              Wayne

A correction to the above, the directory gave the name as H E Obrien and not E H Obrien.
                    Many Thanks

Perhaps H.E. O'Brien was female, or not born/died in England, or was not in England until after 1911 census.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Have you tried the Electoral Rolls? They are held at Sefton Local History at Crosby Library.

If it's one of the many large houses in the area maybe it was the housekeeper or something similar. I've always found names like O'Brien difficult to search for in census. Have you tried searching the 1911 census on Find my Past by the address only? Or do you have who was living there in 1911?

Is it Southport or is it Birkdale?

The information in the street directory would have been probably collected the year.

I can't see how you can solve this unless the house has certain implications which would give clues.
I think electoral rolls may not have been taken during the war but have you checked for post war entries for the address?
H E may not always use a middle name or initial. I can see a Henry O' Brien in 1911 index for example.
