BROPHY of Baunaghra, Clandonagh, Laois
« on: Friday 01 November 13 01:24 GMT (UK) »
I have a Kyran Brophy born 20 Aug 1838 at the above place. His parents appear to be Martin Brophy and Anne Doolan though I am not certain of this. He left his father's farm in 1859 and went to Melbourne, presumably to the Ballarat goldfields (but that is an assumption). In 1861 he left Australia for NZ and was active in goldmining on the West Coast and in Central Otago where he seems to have made enough to buy land near Geraldine, South Canterbury and becoming a farmer in his own right.

I have searched passenger lists to Australia and from Australia to New Zealand but have been unable to find his name among them. Can anyone help with this please ?

Does anyone have any information on his family back in Ireland, his parents, siblings etc.

Any information would be much appreciated.
Regards

I had a look for the R.C. parish records for Baunaghra as Kyran's birth is before civil registration The R.C parish is Galmoy but unfortunately the records only start in 1861 so it would be difficult/impossible to get family details etc. . There is a Martin Brophy with two small  lots of land showing in Baunaghra in Griffiths Valuation (land tax records)

Thanks, Ann, at least I now have the RC Parish of Galmoy.

Kyran said he left Ireland for Austraklia in 1859 and went on to NZ in 1861. Another story says he left in 1862 from Dublin Bay in a group of 4 young men: Kyran Brophy, John Scott, Robert and William Campion. I believe the first year of leaving, 1859, as this was written by him. John Scott also settled in South Canterbury.

If anyone can help in finding the ship and its passenger list, or if anyone has information on departures of Scott or the Campions, that would be very helpful.

After Kyran Brophy was well-established at Pleasant Valley in South Canterbury, in 1883 he sponsored emigration of John Loughman (22), Mary Loughman (18), Ann Loughman (17), and Mary Brophy (25), all from Queens/Laois, on the vessel "Waipa" departing 4 Jan 1883 and arriving Lyttleton on 16 May 1883. Perhaps they were nieces and a nephew ? Any information on these families in Ireland would be helpful and appreciated.

Do you have any parents name for any of the Loughman siblings or Mary Brophy - would help to try and track the family down. Loughman and Brophy are surnames that occur frequently in Queens Co.

Francoso - the message you posted is pretty correct - I live in Australia and Kyran Brophy was my great grandfather. I actually stumbled across your post!

A big coincidence Cadbury1407. You will probably know Brian and Adrian Brophy in Australia ?

I would like to correspond with you through the Personal Message facility, if that's OK with you. I am not the one connected to the Brophy family; that is my wife.

Francoso - how do you do that - I'm new to this site?
