Robert GAHAGAN, Born c1833 ?Guernsey.
« on: Tuesday 05 November 13 16:33 GMT (UK) »
Hello,

I wonder if anyone can help trace some details for Robert GAHAGAN as there are no leads from the Census etc., except 1851 when he is enumerated as "RG" at Parkhurst Prison............the sum total of my knowledge is:

(i):    Probably born 1833 Guernsey;
(ii):   Sentenced for burglary at the Royal Court of Guernsey on 08/12/1849 to transportation for 10 years;
(iii):   He had 7 previous convictions presumably for very minor offences;
(iv):   He had been employed as a Shoemaker and could read and write;
(v):    He was held initially at Millbank Prison in London and then transferred to Parkhurst Prison on
26/03/1850;
(vi):   Subsequently transferred to Portsmouth Prison on 07/12/1853: and
(vii):   Not transported but released on licence (probation) on 13/05/1854.

Any information, no matter how small, could help.

For the moment, thank you,

BAC3

the only Gahagan I could find in census returns in Guernsey

1851 census - St Peters Port ,Guernsey ,CI
Edward Gahagan head aged 51 b St Peters Port
Elizabeth Gahagan wife aged 45 b Vale ,Guernsey
William / Frederick / Ellen / Charles ...possible children...need confirmation if these are the same household
So - where is Edward Gahagan in 1841 census ????

I wonder if these 3 are mistranscriptions ??
Eliza Gagan b 1831
Margaret Gagan 1833
ROBERT GAGAN b 1834 ...all St Peters Port ,Guernsey ...should they read Gahagan ??

any thoughts from other Rootschat members ?? :)

so - is this YOUR Robert Gahagan ?

That looks good for 1841. There is also a 15 yr old James. They are all paupers.

Yes I do. There is a Michael Gagan in 1861 born 1811 in Guernsey_ he is a shoemaker in London.
I just had a quick look back because I have searched for a Geoghan with variations from Guernsey previously.
I have nothing to support it but at that time, I wondered if the origins were from a military connection- perhaps Irish families.

What happens to Robert in later years?

was considered the norm in those days ...so Edward Gahagan / Elizabeth had at least 8 children over that 24 year spell ??...
James, Eliza ,Margaret, Robert ,William ,Frederick ,Ellen ,Charles ..
1826   1831   1833       1834   1842   1844        1846  1849
looking at that list -
1826 - 1831 there was probably another child at least
1834 -1842 possibly a couple more .....
does this look right - or am I jumping the gun here ??

can I ask where you found the info they were Paupers - would explain Roberts tendancy for Petty Crime ?

Paupers in census.
I wouldn't say yet that Edward and Elizabeth are the parents of all children. The oldest in 1851 is 8 yrs so there could have been a late marriage.

That birth looks good though.

I wonder if Robert married - father's name?
