I know BAC3 says there are no other leads from census or information but there must be a reason for the search  :)
Perhaps we should wait to see now?

I think you found him though in 1841.

best wishes

Yes I do. There is a Michael Gagan in 1861 born 1811 in Guernsey_ he is a shoemaker in London.
I just had a quick look back because I have searched for a Geoghan with variations from Guernsey previously.
I have nothing to support it but at that time, I wondered if the origins were from a military connection- perhaps Irish families.

What happens to Robert in later years?

as Michael is a Shoemaker b 1811 Guernsey
and Robert was a Shoemaker b 1834 Guernsey (siblings  Eliza 1831 /Margaret b 1833 )
" Robert  had been employed as a Shoemaker and could read and write "(BAC3 first post )
do we consider Michael as a possible father ??

Thank you both for all your input.......I am very grateful, especially as there are some interesting, and seemingly profitable, avenues to explore after the holidays when I shall come back to you.

Until then, my best wishes for Christmas with the hope of a less stormy 2014!!

Sorry Garstonite,

The sum total of my knowledge is that in my original posting.......my hope is to try and establish a life history for him to determine whether or not his "stay" at Parkhurst Prison was reformative or not.

Is Robert not a family member then?
Just thinking if we look for other Gahagans it wouldn't help you.

Hi from another Gahagan researcher!

I think this info is most likely correct:

the only Gahagan I could find in census returns in Guernsey

1851 census - St Peters Port ,Guernsey ,CI
Edward Gahagan head aged 51 b St Peters Port
Elizabeth Gahagan wife aged 45 b Vale ,Guernsey
William / Frederick / Ellen / Charles ...possible children...need confirmation if these are the same household
So - where is Edward Gahagan in 1841 census ????

I wonder if these 3 are mistranscriptions ??
Eliza Gagan b 1831
Margaret Gagan 1833
ROBERT GAGAN b 1834 ...all St Peters Port ,Guernsey ...should they read Gahagan ??

any thoughts from other Rootschat members ?? :)

so - is this YOUR Robert Gahagan ?

I am descended from Edward and Elizabeth's eldest daughter Mary Gahagan (1823-1899), and have been wondering about those 'Pauper' Children too!

IF this Robert does belong here, it is interesting that both his Father and his Uncle (Michael James G (1089-1874) are also Shoemakers...

Has anyone got any further with the mystery??

Thank you for your posting Clare.

Sadly the story of Robert GAHAGAN, for the purposes of my research, has not moved on since last year.   The only cautiously acceptable recognition is that he was named GAGAN in the 1841 Channel Islands Census, but that "lead" has not produced any further biography.   A pity.

It seems the case of Robert GAHAGAN (GAGAN) may have to remain in my pending tray for some time yet.

Take care,

Tony
