RAN surname, Argyll Scotland
« on: Sunday 10 November 13 05:37 GMT (UK) »
Hello, my gt gt gt grandmother's maiden surname was recorded on her children's baptism records as RAN.  This appears to me  a fairly unusual name and I haven't had much luck on the web, even trying spellings like Rann. It comes up with Wren, Wran etc. I think there are some Ranns in the US too.

Is anyone familiar with this name? Is it Scottish? She lived near Loch Gilphead early 1800's and married a Campbell, but it doesn't seem to be a local name from that area.

Any RAN surname experts out there? ???

It is probably a form of the commoner name Rain. If you enter it in Scotland on Family Search you will come up with a good number of entries.
