John WORGLEY, Vicar of Little Missenden
« on: Sunday 10 November 13 12:50 GMT (UK) »
A John WORGLEY was vicar of Little Missenden in the late 1500s. He seems to have had a family there but the appearance of the name there peters out before the Civil War.

Does anyone know whether the family died out, moved out or changed spelling to something different?

Can't help with John Worgley, but there are a few records for other WORLEY/ WORGLY/ WORGLEY/WARGLEY in Great Missenden, from 1611 to 1830.  Not many though.

Would they be of any interest to you.?

Steve. :)

Thanks Steve & Priscilla  :)

I am wondering if these Missenden WORGLEYs turned into the Burnham/Upton Cum Chalvey WORLEYs who appeared in the 1600s (other than a single WORLEY at Upton in 1500) and then spread to Farnham Royal & the Chalfonts. The spelling WORGLEY is also found in Staffordshire along with WORKLEY so I wonder if that was where this family came from originally and then moved to Bucks and softened their accent until their name was pronounced WORLEY/WIRLEY???

Its not that common is it!

I notice that one of the Missenden WORGLEYs was called Edward. This was a name that is strongly asssociated with the later WORLEYs so again perhaps this strengthens the theory that they are one and the same family?

I can't see any wills listed for the Missenden WORGLEYs though. As one or two of them were vicars you would have thought they had them, although which spelling was used might not be straightforward?

Sorry, SuperM.  My point was, if he was a vicar, his name may have been as a witness to marriages.  This would turn up in any marriage search. ;D

Great Missenden PR's.

Marriage - 1 Jun 1595.  Edward WARGLEY to Doritie TRAY??

Burial - 29 Nov 1620.   Dorothie WOORSLEY (BT).

No other records for Edward & Doritie/Dorothie. :(

I would hazard a guess, the BucksFHS transcribers had job with the 'chicken scratch', as they very rarely miss anything.. ::)

g instead of s. Yes it's possible.

Still there should be at least one will for the family, especially the vicar(s)! Does the Online Bucks Wills Database do soundex searches? I don't think it does but it might be useful..
