Thank you Dawnsh. John Perry DOB 1819 left his wife and child in Devizes and married and had two girls with a Matilda Imison. They all lived together on various census records.Rather odd !

Hi all, sent for the birth ,marriage and death certs.

Birth    John Perry Neate Perry 1849 Strand London   this is when I think the father John Perry first took off to London. Mother is listed as Jane Perry nee Neate. (names very common in Devizes and All Cannings)Also know that the Perrys married Neates in other generations.

Marriage    William John Neate Perry  marries Sarah Jane Newton July 6th 1880 in Shepton Mallett .He refers to his father as John Perry deceased gentleman which is accurate regarding the father's death cert.

Death  23rd of August 1938 occupation Grocer (nb his father was a grocer in Devizes .It didn't last long as he ran off to London !)

I have continued searching census and Birth marriage and death entries for John William Neate Perry but can find nothing else.

To top it all the relative I am doing this for told me this was all wrong! Mind you she is 103 !

So where is the John William Neate Perry that she insists should be there ?

I thought people often changed or swapped their names around?
And William was his grandfather's name ! ???

Thank you again for all your support
Miggs.

Hi Miggs

We all like a puzzle.

In your opening post you mention legal documents, what were they and what date are they?

Hi Dawnsh, Thanks for replying so quickly.
The documents are about £90 worth of A3 that my Aunt and Father got from Chippenham records office. They contain a huge variety of info regarding the will of Clare the coroner of Devizes whom  the parents of John Perry  (the elder) looked after in Southbroom until his death.Need to check dates but around 1815 to 1825.

They inherited large amounts of land in Devizes, money and shares.

The legal documents go on until 1878 (roughly) when my great grandfather married Mary Sarah Sissons Perry.Various declarations that she is an only child….they were making sure that the illegitimate children did not inherit.Included is Mary Sarah Sisson's will that leaves some money to her brother. The first time we come across him.He does not appear in the other census records with the illegitimate girls. My thoughts are he is with his mother under her maiden name possibly Neate or his mother marries and he uses his stepfather's name.

The main problem is that my Aunt and Father have been studying genealogy for over fifty years. They both have files and files and files…. of info. but will not share it with each other and only give me the snippet they want me to check or research.I am caught in the middle! I am on oath not to tell the other if I find anything! It's driving me mad!
To solve it I need to go to the Chippenham records office and buy the lot for myself but I keep thinking that the one who is 103 can't last much longer.I know that is horrible for me to think like that.

The mention of the brother John William Neate Perry is in a will that was not proved but I have not been allowed to see the document.

I have seen the letters Mary Sarah Sissons Perry Banks wrote to her solicitor asking him to sell what was left of her possessions as they now had no money left and that takes it to around 1890ish.

Thanks for showing an interest. I'll just have to persevere and continue to link the revealed snippets .
As you say it is a puzzle and I still haven't found the William Perry who jumped ship off the Port of Natal and was presumed dead ,eaten by sharks ! Thats also in the documents.

When I inherit the lot I think I'll write a book about it! Would make a great BBC thriller!
Thank you again Miggs.

See what you mean!

Thank God she is well and also as bright as a button.

She tells me stories of her memories of WW 1 when she had to hide under the table with sister and mother to avoid the Zepplins !

Hi all,I'm back on the search! I have inherited all the documents and have spent the last four months sorting ,reading and filing etc.
The will of Mary Sarah Sissons (Perry ) Banks of 1876 states :-

"Give and bequeath to my brother John William Neate Perry the legacy or sum of one hundred pounds".

Trouble is this is the only time he appears in file after file of legal documents. I followed up on earlier posts and sent for the Birth ,marriage and death certs but it gets me no further in proving who he really was.My late Aunt was convinced it was wrong.

Anyone got any ideas that I may have not thought about ?

Thank you.   :)
