Thanks Chris,

I know he went onto have a management role in the coal mines, but I have never heard of a under steward only an under manager

thanks again

Steve

A Colliery Steward was another name for a Colliery Agent, or in Yorkshire the name for a manager of a small pit. A Colliery Agent was in complete control of the technical and commercial affairs of a colliery, and was solely responsible to the directors, and for the appointment of  subordinate superintending staff. At some mines there was a Surface Agent and an Underground Agent.
