You might be interested to know that whilst searching for images to help solve this mystery....I found a photo of a Vinolia soap box that was given to me recently...it is shown on page number 15…is dated c.1912

That's interesting Carol.  What a fascinating website that is with loads of reading.  I've only just seen it - I must have missed the notification of your post.  Some wonderful stuff on there with pages of drawings, photos and information - thanks for posting it.

Wooden friezes could be used in lots of locations, and not just on a staircase. Would it be possible to see the profile - ie from the side? The bottom edge looks rabetted, so designed to cap another piece.

I recently discovered an old wood artifact in an antique store and wondered the same thing. Hoping is has a nautical connection.

Any chance it could have been some sort of practice piece Rachael?

Equally I suppose it could have been a piece which did not reach the required standard and was discarded.
