Where was Maughan Terrace, West Cornforth (1930's)?
« on: Saturday 23 November 13 12:09 GMT (UK) »
I can see from a modern map Maughan Close, but I think this is 1950/60's council housing.

I've looked at a few old maps but can't see Maughan Terrace anyway.

Any ideas?

Cheers
Jay

It was common for a row of houses on a main road to be called terrace or buildings and given a separate name, which would not be shown on a map.

Husband says Maughan Terrace was one of a row of houses demolished back in the late seventies/early eighties. There was a social club built next to the site and a car park laid over where the houses were. Club now demolished but in its place is the doctors surgery in Reading Street; the cark park remains

Hope this helps

scrap my earlier answer  ;) I managed to talk to a local stalwart of Doggie history and he says...

"was Maughan Street not Terrace and it was down the low side behind Reading Street and the left hand side of the High Street behind the Flintlock as far as the Railway Line and the bank down from John Cockerels shop. If you give me a name I may be able to tell you when they attended school"

so probably where maughan close is situated now !

Although it is not very clear I think that Maughan Street is the street running north off East Street, parallel to New Road Terrace, on the 1919-1920 map at http://www.old-maps.co.uk/maps.htm?coords=430966,534406

Thanks Pudden for the extra info, from Andy?  I'm sure it was Maughan Terrace as the info comes for several years of electoral registers.

Thanks Stan for that link, this family had also lived at New Road Terrace which I found on the map a while go so.
