Another Jewish question
« on: Monday 25 November 13 15:53 GMT (UK) »
Can anyone recommend a good book on Jewish genealogy, please ?  I think my 2 main problems are.....

! That it looks as though most of the books are written from an American  perspective.
2 That my ancestors were already in Britain by 1820.....it seems that you have a lot more information to work with if you're starting from 1870 onwards..

From the local background, I imagine they were from present day Poland/Lithuania (on census it says "Germany")

Thanks

I looked at them briefly a few years ago but I'm still trying to prove the family story that my gt.grandfather was really a Russian Jew...........

Might get some ideas here:

Good Luck!

Thanks again, Jan. You never know where or when you might find something. I didn't know until I started this lark.....even then, there were only strong indicators. Then I asked a general question about a legal document my grandparents had executed when they got engaged that we found when my grandmother died (my father had never seen it), which listed the things my grandfather was going to bring into the marital home. I could only think it was some kind of pre-marital agreement, but it didn't say anything about what was going to happen to them if the marriage failed & women didn't really have any rights in the event of divorce at that time. A Jewish poster informed me that it was a Jewish tradition...my grandfather's family had obviously carried on the tradition even after they'd left the faith.
