**COMPLETED** Jabesh - Jabez - Jabosh - Jabesa - Help !
« on: Tuesday 26 November 13 17:06 GMT (UK) »
All the names appear in census / marriage / death entries for the Laytons in Canada but they are names I have never heard of before and do not know if they are male or female names.    They might have been transcribed wrong of course.  I have an Edwin marrying Jabesa, so presumably that is female.  but then I have also seen that name when it was possibly male.  Can someone help please.  Are they names particular to Canada perhaps ?

Jabez is a male Biblical name - definitely not exclusive to Canada :)

The others I am not familiar with but may well be variants. Perhaps Jabesa is a female variant?

Have a look here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jabez

And from a Baby Names website:
Jabesh \j(a)-be-sh\ as a boy's name is a variant of Jabez (Hebrew), and the meaning of Jabesh is "borne in pain".

The baby name Jabesh sounds like Abisha and Abishai. Other similar baby names are Jabes and Janesh.

I have a Jabez in my tree who was male.  Some of the census returns also spelt it as Jabey.
