Hi Suz,

I appreciate that you have provided the census record showing Samuel as the father of Charlotte Matilda Hall,  it would not be unusual for the brother "William' to be in witness at his younger sisters certificate of marriage, likely it was a clerical error that William appeared as 'father' on the certificate.   Samuel it is...
Thanks again,
Gary

Hi Suz,
I visited grandmother Florence today,  born some 130 years ago, I visit her grave often.  I tell her what I've learned about her ancestry and England.  While she was alive about all that I knew is that she was born and lived in England, did not even know where about in England until ten years ago. Grandmother passed away in 1972.  Gram made the best bread and sweet rolls and pies you could ever imagine.  She was poor, her husband, a Danish-German sailor had died early in his life and they were not well to do then.  Grandmother every year put in a sizable vegetable garden and a large mixed flower garden, and always had something baking in the oven.  She was a fine English grandmother, a wonderful woman.  I wish to thank you for helping define her ancestry there in Great Yarmouth.  It is no wonder that she made such wonderful breads, she coming from a lineage of that profession. I appreciate messages you have posted to help me understand a bit more about her historical lineage.   Gary

Benjamin Arthur Balls parents look to be Benjamin Barber Balls and Martha Mitchell who married on 20th Feb 1859 in Dartford Kent.

Dear Candrjm,                                 Dec. 38th, 2013

Much of the information you have provided is new to me, and I sure appreciate that it verifies and corrects family, dates, and locations of the Balls Family of Norfolk.

There is still a bit of mystery to resolve, and if you wish to see what information there is thus far, please visit tribalpages at this link:

                 http://mcmath.tribalpages.com/?userid=mcmath&x=9&y=9

When the story page on George and Nancy McMath opens up simply type-in   mcmath   in the Security box, upper right of initial page as a password...  You may then click on the Balls family name to investigate the extent of what is known, or perceived so far.

Thank you so very much for your help with my English family ancestry.

 Gary

I've been looking at your Mitchell line and I see that you have Sarah Mitchell married to Robert Mitchell.

I think that Martha Mitchell was the illegitimate daughter of Sarah Mitchell and that Sarah was not married to Robert but was his daughter.

Baptism for Martha Mitchell:

County   Norfolk
Place   Great Massingham
Church   Saint Mary
RegisterNumber   549
DateOfBirth
BaptismDate   17 Jun 1832
Forename   Martha
Sex   F
FatherForename
MotherForename   Sarah
FatherSurname
MotherSurname   MITCHELL
Abode
FatherOccupation
Notes   Illegitimate
FileNumber   1110

The 1871 census records Sarah as follows:

    Sarah Mitchell
Event Type:    Census
Event Date:    1871
Gender:    Female
Age:    60
Relationship to Head of Household:    Mother
Birthplace:    Middleton, Norfolk
Schedule Type:    Household
Registration District:    Yarmouth
Sub-District:    Southern
Parish:    Great Yarmouth
County:    Norfolk
     Household    Gender    Age    Birthplace
Self    Martha Balls    F    37    Massingham, Norfolk
Mother    Sarah Mitchell    F    60    Middleton, Norfolk
Son    Arthur Balls    M    11    Dartford, Kent
Servant    Emily Cocks    F    21    Thomson, Norfolk

This looks like Sarah's baptism (in the Middleton parish register) at the bottom of the left hand page and records her parents as Alice and Robert

I suspect that Martha named her father as Robert Mitchell (using her grandfather's name) on her marriage certificate.

I wonder if the Mitchells moved to Massingham  after Sarah was born as there is this baptism in 1816 in Massingham:

County   Norfolk

MotherForename   Alice

MotherSurname   GORDON

and these baptisms on freereg in Middleton:

Dear Candrjm,                                 Sunday Dec, 29th, 2013

Re your post: "I've been looking at your Mitchell line and I see that you have Sarah Mitchell married to Robert Mitchell."   Yes, only hours ago using the marriage certificate info naming Robert I decided to do this, I shall now remove Robert, your logic about Sarah's declaration of fatherhood seems plausible ie: "I think that Martha Mitchell was the illegitimate daughter of Sarah Mitchell and that Sarah was not married to Robert, but was his daughter."

You and 'Suz' have been of marvelous assistance in helping me along with defining the Hall and Balls families of Norfolk and greater England, and then further defining the Mitchell connection nearly back to the late 1700's.

Thanking you both again,
Gary

I have been able to get downright intimate with factual information about my Anglican ancestors.
