Mystery house (Otley, WRY?) and men's outing (Yorkshire?)
« on: Tuesday 03 December 13 17:14 GMT (UK) »
Can anyone help me to identify these photos, please?

The first one (akquery05.jpg) is taken from a sepia print about postcard size. The intriguing thing about this is that I have some other photos (glass quarter-plate negatives) which appear to be the ones being taken by the photographer on the right in this one. I am fairly certain that the group on the left is members of the family of Thomas Duncan of Belmont, Otley, WRY and that the photographer is one of his sons; the date is probably around 1900-1906. However, is the house in Otley, and if so, where?

The addresses I have for members of this family in Otley around that time are Belmont, Weston Lane (a big house, now demolished); Kylemore, Billams Hill; 31 Queen's Terrace; and 11 Cambridge Terrace. There were other related Duncan families in Otley as well, most notably at Westbourne (another big house, which I think had much more open space around it). As far as I can tell, this picture isn't of any of these houses, but does anyone recognise it?

The second photo (akquery06.jpg) appears to be a men's outing of some sort, and I know very little about it. My late aunt thought it had been taken at Austby, Middleton, Ilkley, but having lived in Ilkley myself, I think this is very unlikely. Might there be some connection with a family (Wilson) that lived there? Basically, can anyone give me any clues as to who, when, where, and what the occasion might have been, please? (This photo is pasted to a board and has been roughly trimmed, and there is no trace of a photographer's name. I could provide an enlargement of one or two figures to help with dating their clothes etc if necessary.)

Many thanks,

Arthur

Looking at StreetView, oldish houses in Otley all seem to be built of stone but this one seems to be brick.  :-\
Today I broke my personal record for most consecutive days alive.

Very cool, having a photo and a photo of the photo being photographed. If you follow me :P ;D

From the bit of the lady's dress that I can see, I'd put the date about 1908-1910 due to the puffy blouse front and the width of the hat. Might be able to get more out of it if we could see the photo that is being photographed. The close-up, I mean ;D

Cheers,

You have a question mark after WRY,indicating that you might be unsure of its meaning. It stands for West Riding of Yorkshire.
Agree with China about the date.

Here's one of the photos that was being taken. I actually have two other very similar ones as well, but they are missing the chap in the middle at the back.

The dates you suggest seem pretty close to what I think, but I am sure that the old man is a Thomas Duncan who died in December 1906. He and his (then late) wife had 9 children, of whom 7 would have been alive then; the photo appears to show the two remaining daughters and three of the remaining five sons, but I'm not sure which ones.

No, I'm fully aware of what WRY stands for. The question mark is to indicate my uncertainty as to whether the location is in Otley or not. I thought my original posting made this clear.

What a lovely relaxed garden photo! Does it have a photographer's stamp on it anywhere, Arthur?

No - firstly, I've copied this from a glass negative, and secondly, I think the photographer was an enthusiastic amateur who appears to have done all his own processing etc. I think he was probably one of the Duncan sons.
