James Birch
« on: Tuesday 10 December 13 17:50 GMT (UK) »
Grateful for advice on where to search for a marriage in the 1820s.

The Couple were James Birch who married Catherine (surname unknown) around 1829. The family appear in the 1841 census in Shoreditch, London. James was 40, Catherine 30. Their eldest child 11. So I suspect they married around 1828/29.

James has died by the 1851 census, but Catherine is recorded as born in Westminster. So I would expect the marriage to have been either in Westminster or somewhere in the East End. Family appears to have been C of E.

That’s really helpful. Thank you. What are my options for finding their baptisms and parents?

Hi would I be correct on the 1851 census Catherine b c 1814 Westminster has remarried a William Poutney/Poulteney c 1845, with Birch children shown as wifes children by previous husband, the marriage would tell you her fathers name at least, or not, looking at the marriage 19th August 1844 St Dunstan & All Saints, Stepney?

Residing at 4, Middle Walk, Georges Gardens, Bethnal Green
Census ref HO107/1541/597/27

Or! A Catherine Birch Widow 29 marrying a William Trenter/Tranter 27 11th August 1846 St Philip, Bethnal Green, Father Richard Hayes?

On both occasions due to mobile, unable to view originals!

OK this is an odd one, if I have located the correct James and Catherine and family in 1841 and Catherine and children In 1851 above, as this looks to be the Poutney family in 1861:-

William Poutney 37 Widower occ Shoemaker b Shoreditch
Eliza 16
Benjamin 12
Henry 11
Sarah 6
Residing at 33, Hope Street, Bethnal Green
Census ref RG09/253/141/33

The Birch children on 1851 were:-

James 1834
Martha 1838
Leonard 1840
John 1843

And a Jane b 1830 in 1841

Martha looks to have married a Henry Henshaw

This is really helpful. Thank you. Yes the 1841 & 1851 families are right. Catherine remarried to William Poulteney (sic) in 1844. I think therefore that the 1846 Trenter marriage you have found must be another woman (though it’s odd that she matches this one so closely).

Catherine makes her mark unfortunately, so no scope for signature comparison.

Catherine BIRCH 29 Widow of 2 Albion Place.  Father Richard HAYES, farrier.

Both made their mark.
Witnesses: Benjamin Tranter (made his mark); William Sarvent (or Parvent?) (signed).
Ayr: Barnes, Wylie
Caithness: MacGregor
Essex: Eldred (Pebmarsh)
Gloucs: Timbrell (Winchcomb)
Hants: Stares (Wickham)
Lincs: Maw, Jackson (Epworth, Belton)
London: Pierce
Suffolk: Markham (Framlingham)
Surrey: Gosling (Richmond)
Wilts: Matthews, Tarrant (Calne, Preshute)
