Three Horse Shoes Inn Llanfihangel Nant Bran
« on: Monday 16 December 13 00:38 GMT (UK) »
Hi,
I have conflicting data regarding the location of the Three Horse Shoes Inn in Llanfihangel Nant Bran. It no longer exists, but I am interested because one of my family, ran it for many years. I am confused because the OS map of 1904 clearly shows it next door to the Malt House, but the Tithe Map of 1840 has it opposite the Church....
Just curious!
Merry Christmas to all in LlfhNB :) :) :) :)

Enter these numbers in the Coordinates box, and go. . 294500/234500
This is for the 1905 map, it is shown as close to St Michaels Church, also on earlier maps.

Thank you Wilcoxon!

I can't see the 1905 map on my computer, because the scale is so much smaller. However, the 1904 map has an arrow pointing to the building next to the Malt House, and all the earlier maps I can see are vague because they only have the name shown above the general area of the village.  One of the LlNB burial records shows Margaret Pugh (my relative) lived at the "Upper Tavern" and the earliest has Ann Watkins at the "Three Horse Shoes" on the Brecon Road. Maybe the Horse lost a Shoe on its way up the street from the Church.
Could you check the 1905 map and see if it has a little arrow on it too?

Cheers,
Llanfi   :) :) :) :)

I have looked but can`t spot it, I think the 1904 maps is  clearer, but unless you subscribe to the Old maps site, then this is the best you can get.

Yes, I have the same problem with that map!

I visited the building next to the Church a couple of years ago and the lady living there said the pub was called the "Black Horse".

Cheers,

hi
my ancestors  the pritchards lived at the  three horse shoes llanfihangel nant bran  in 1911. they are shown on the census. i am lead to believe that the pub was the property first on the left as you pass the telephone kiosk (passing kiosk on your left)

Hello CARDI,
I purchased a copy of a Llanfihangel Nant Bran Tithe map and it shows the Three Horse Shoes as being the lovely house opposite the Church. The building you refer to is now called the Malt House and is run as part of a B&B in LlNB. It looks like a Malt House, so I think that is correct. I stayed at "The Granary" - part of the large Farm House just up the hill from there and confirmed that it was definitely not "The Three Horse Shoes"....  The 1891 Census shows the Three Horse Shoes head of family as John Davies and in 1901 he was still there age 73, his wife Ann, 80, and daughter Mary 39. One of my ancestors Anne Pugh married David Watkins who owned the Three Horse Shoes in 1833, and she ran the pub with her sister-in-law Margaret.  Margaret died in 1871 and the parish record has her home shown as the "Upper Tavern". Anne's husband Thomas Pugh was a Maltster and presumably worked in the Malt House
I'd like to have your comments!
Cheers,
Llanfi :) :) :)

Hi Llanfi
Cannot disagree with your comments ,information i have was given to me by the  marternal side of family.
My great grand father thomas moved to the area from llyswen in 1901. he was
28 and working on farm in llanfihangel .as i said on 1911 census he is at the three horse shoes with his wife sarah and three young children including my grandfather john who later married lucy havard who was a teacher at the school.
thomas s occupation is shown as road worker with council.
Cannot add much more than this at time .

hi
futher to my message this morning i have looked up maps on national library of Scotland website.
here you can look up old maps and use and use overlay of google earth through drag button to focus.
The position of the three horse shoes on several maps is not definitely clarified but may help.
(Type nls maps overlay into google use first search result)
