Moffat/Tait
« on: Tuesday 17 December 13 12:39 GMT (UK) »
I am trying to find any information on Mary MacDonald (Maimie) MOFFAT and James S. S. TAIT, Paisley.

All I know is they were married in the Nithsdale Hotel, Dumfries. She lived at 24 Brooke Street, Dumfries. Her father was a plumber.

Her Grandfather, R J MOFFAT (master plumber) was deceased at the time and, he died 4 March 1926. So, I know they were married late 1926 or later.

Would like to know if they stayed in Dumfries or, whether they moved to Paisley.

Any information will be very much appreciated.

Afternoon, Cupcake

They married at Dumfries in 1937, according to ScotlandsPeople.  The marriage record image is available but I haven't looked at it.  This should say where they were both living at the time of their marriage.  I guess you could research historic electoral rolls in the local archives to find out where they were living before and afterwards.

Regards

Good evening landj,

Many thanks for the information. I will check their marriage  details on Scotland's People.

Not too sure where the to look for the historic electoral rolls in the local archives. Had thought about looking at the electoral rolls at the reference dept. at the library but If I remember, I would need an address to locate them.

Unfortunately, you very much need an address to search the electoral rolls. PO telephone books for the period may be the best way forward, cupcake, with your access to local libraries and resources. You can search these by surname/area etc.

Have you tried to search for a death for a Mary M(a)cDonald/Tait on SP? Might give you further clues...

Thank you for confirming I would need an address to search the electoral rolls.

I will have a look at the PO telephone books for 1937/1939.

No, I haven't searched for a death for Mary on Scotland's people but will do.

Many thanks for your help

No joy finding Mary and James in the directories.  There is a possibility they may have moved North as James was from Paisley.

If I can find their first born's entry, it would give me an address and a place for me to start searching.

cupcake, just playing around on SP on the general search screen. Can't really see a death for a Mary Moffat/Tait on SP (any age/year)  :-\ Possibility they left Scotland perhaps?

Monica,

I have ben searching for births on Scotland's People but unfortunately, most of them have no Image which doesn't help.

From their marriage entry, Mary was 33yrs  and James was 29yrs. There is a slim chance they didn't have any children.

Also did a search for their deaths again, there are many without images. You may be right and they left Scotland :-\

Can't think where else to look unless searching the papers at the library :'(

There is a marriage showing in Glasgow in 1944 for a Mary McDonald Moffat just in the off chance that James Tait died (in those war years?) and Mary Moffat remarried. Just throwing options in as possibilities really. As you know, you are outside of the period where you can view these entries online on SP.

Have you looked at that 1937 marriage mentioned by iandj? Do you know Mary's mother's maiden name? You could also try searching for a death for her as Mary Moffat with mother's maiden name. If she died after 1974, SP have added mother's maiden name for deaths up to that point online on the search index/results page.
