Can anyone tell me whether there are any searchable newspaper archives for the SE Bucks area for the late 1800s? Thanks.

Hi,

I don't know if this is of any help but...
Do you have access to the 19th century newspapers site perhaps through your library membership?
if yes. go to the site and search by location, then select SE, then oxford and Jackson's Oxford Journal Will pop up.
Sorry it is the best that i can suggest for you.

Thanks Cullen.  :)

Will check this out although not too sure Jacksons would cover across to Bucks. I am interested in finding wedding announcements/reports which are normally only published in very local papers.

Papers I know of in the area in the late 1800s were:-

  • Broadwater's Buckinghamshire Advertiser, Uxbridge Journal, Middlesex, Herts, Berks, Beds, and Oxon Gazette
  • The Bucks Herald

But not sure if these are archived or accessible.

Hi Supermoussi

The Centre for Bucks Studies has Bucks Herald on microfilm - not indexed though, but I seem to remember that the Bucks Herald was being digitised and available on line -worth trying.
Chesham Library has Bucks Examiner on Microfilm for late 1800's and if you have dates I could do a look up for you on this one.

Thanks Cullen, but according to this

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buckinghamshire_Examiner

the Bucks Examiner only started in 1889. I need to go back to the 1870s so that was why I mentioned Broadwater's Buckinghamshire Advertiser, Uxbridge Journal, Middlesex, Herts, Berks, Beds, and Oxon Gazette which I think would cover the right period?

Do you know what dates the microfilm you mentioned starts from?
