REGENT ROAD BARRACKS SALFORD 1881

The 1881 census shows my Grandfather as a soldier in G Company at these barracks. My question is G Company of which Regiment?
This question is prompted following some research. My Grandfather, John Boyd, Born in Ireland in 1858 enlisted in the army at Glasgow on 2 June 1879 and was attested to the 66th Brigade and embarked for Ceylon in December of the same year. The 66th Bde returned to England after a long period of overseas service in February 1881 and were stationed at Parkhurst on the Isle of Wight. At this time, the numbering of regiments was abandoned and the 66th became the 2nd Battalion the Berkshire Regiment.
I find it highly unlikely that the Berkshire Regiment would have then been posted to the North of England. Also looking at the list of all the other soldiers at Regent Road Barracks at this time, the majority of them came from the North of England or Ireland. So friends, does anyone have any idea which regiment or regiments would have been stationed in these barracks at this time. Thank you for having the patience to read my first post.

Hi Demob Happy.
Welcome to the forum.
Regent Road Barracks was an infantry barracks.
On an other forum I viewed a while ago someone stated that their relation was stationed there on the 1881 census and that his occupation was given as Sgt L/Infantry Regiment. Hope this is of some help.
Regards Dave.

Thanks Dave, I did actually see that post you mention and followed it up. However all I could find in the list at the barracks was a private soldier of that name but no regiment. I suspect that on census forms the term L/infantry may have been a general term. If it was indeed Light Infantry then it raises the question, which one? Thanks again for the reply, I'll keep searching and hoping, Kind regards
Chris

Thanks again Stan, now it's beginning to make more sense as there are a lot of Liverpool soldiers in that list and I see that the 8th L.I. became the King's (Liverpool) Regt on 1 July 1881. All this ties in with my family, my father was in the Manchester Regt in WWI and in recent years the King's Liverpool Regt merged with the Manchesters to become, once again the KING'S. All good (to me at least) interesting stuff. :) Your help much appreciated.

Hi Chris

The record you found on FindMyPast is the wrong John Boyd. If you look on page 4 he is in Ceylon for the 1881 census.

The John Boyd in the 8th Foot does not appear to have served long enough to be given a pension. So his record will not have been kept. The 1st Battalion 8th Foot moved to Bradford in December 1881 and then to Ireland in July 1882.

They were never known as light infantry.

Thanks Ken, just been delving further into it. I'm now trying to sort it out. The John Boyd I thought was my grandfather did embark for Ceylon on 11.12.1879 and transferred to the RWF. Confused now, pity he didn't have a rare surname then it would be easy.
