Yes I agree that Mary Porter nee Coulthard is more than likely the niece of Jannet Brow.  There is a baptism in Arthuret on 27th May, 1847 for a Mary - mother Margaret Coulthard.

Hi,

Thought I would add some pictures to this post while I have the opportunity. I still cant figure how to do it via the Ipad!

Ive attached a picture of Annie Brow and then a few people I am stuck on and cant fit into the album at all.

The first is of the old man. The back of the photo has him labelled as Mr Muller, April 1896 from Hydon End, Hambledon, Guildford, Surrey.  This photo is the second one in the album. I cannot work out how this man is linked to the others in the album. From what I can gather he was a rather rich man called Joseph Muller.

The second is a side portrait of a man labelled 'C. North. Graham. London'

The third is a man labelled as 'Dr Ridley Porter, London, Died in India.

Both of the latter two photos share a page with Mr and Mrs John Porter of Holmfoot, Kirklinton, however I cannot find a link between them. Nor can I find any reference to their names in census'

Can anyone help?

Thankyou!

Shosh

The photo of Ridley is a very early one.  I think he was the Ridley Porter, Medical Student born Bishopgate London on the 1851 census aged 21.  He was an assistant surgeon with the East India Company and died 17th September, 1857.  His father Thomas Porter on the census was also a Surgeon, aged 57 and born Cumberland Cardew.  Now I am guessing, but John Porters father was also born Cardew and was 56 on the 1851 census so I am wondering if Ridley and John were cousins.  There are a couple of baptisms on family search for Dalston which have the same parents for both John Snr. and Thomas - George Porter and Jane Reed.

Hi,

Joseph Muller married Isabella Sarah Emma Friend in 1895. She was born Isabella Sarah Emma GRAHAM and baptised to a Christopher North Graham and Isabella on 26th January, 1854 at St. Giles, Camberwell.  Father a Gentleman of Herne Hill.  This would explain the C North Graham.

I can`t find a link yet, but it`s cold and wet so I am not moving.

Wow Mo you are amazing!

I had found Ridley since my last post but not past the 1850 census. Could you give me any tips on how your found how he was in the East India Company and how you found the date of death?

Also, I had found Mr Muller, and his wife on census' but nothing more than that, again I spent ages looking with no success! How did you find her father?

Thank you so much for finding this info!

On another note, I've located a living relative in this family tree and have shared the photos and  information with them. It's all very exciting!

I like a good puzzle  ;D  I found Ridleys death details from the probate index.  Isabella was a little more difficult, so I just searched for an Isabella Sarah Emma birth in 1853/4.  When I saw the baptism I knew we had the right one.  She married Charles Thomas Friend in 1889.

These families were loaded - Christopher North Graham left over half a million!

It's so interesting but also so sad. It seems that in 1861 C.North Graham was a grocer. In 1875 Isabella filed for divorce for reasons of cruelty. I cannot see if this was granted or not though.

There are many Graham's in The Longtown area. Searching for the link!

No they didn`t divorce and the case was dismissed.  I also got sidetracked reading it.  I noticed he was a Wholesale Grocer on the 1861.  It reminds of someone saying they were a cotton weaver only to find they actually owned quite a few mills.  CNG actually didn`t make a will so when he died Isabella was granted administration.  ;D
