JOLLY - North East Scotland
« on: Sunday 29 December 13 17:49 GMT (UK) »
Hi everyone,
This is a long term project.  Over the past four years I've accumulated a few hundred :-[ 'not mine' Jolly records from SP. I'm now at a brick wall with 'my' Jollys and thought if I could make sense of all the Jollys in the NE of Scotland I might be able to eventually make links back to my branch. I'm going to start with the Jollys on the Kincardineshire 41 census then when (if) I get that far I'll start on the Angus group from 41.  Like I said this is a long term winter project for when I'm not in the garden! Please get in touch if you're interested in NE Scotland Jollys.

Hi I know its not the north of Scotland but BOWDEN cemeteryhere in the Scottish  Borders near Melrose (Roxburghshire)  has a JOLLY who was the minister here for many years.
"186      Obelisk   Sacred to the memory of the Rev THOMAS JOLLY disruption minister"
"of Bowden born December 1795 settled in Bowden 4.8.1829 died minister of the"
"Free Church 30.5.1859"

Thanks Alan,
You would have thought Thomas was a wee bit too far south for me but indeed he looks to be a bit too far north. Thomas was born in Dunnet in Caithness and in fact his father (also a Thomas) is still the minister there in 1841 age 85. Hmm, just had to have a look at papa a very interesting man by the sound of it and he was born of a farmer - William Jolly of Glenbervie. ;D ;D ;D
Looks like I have another group of Jollys to investigate - thank you Alan!

"Jolly" good luck with your endeavour.

One question, have you searched the surname "Jolly" in IGI for Scotland?
9640 results, and thay are free. Cheaper than SP

Hi Malky,
When I started out I only used SP but since joining Rootschat I have discovered so many other resources and learned SO much. I now use the IGI as a searching tool before parting with pennies at SP. The NE Jollys have been on the back burner I'm afraid as I've been writing up my Fraser and Russell branches. I'll hopefully make more inroads this winter when the weather forces me out of the garden!

Hi,
That'll be Thomas married to Elizabeth Ferrier? I've got some information on his siblings Margaret and William if that's any help.
