Quaker family in Norfolk
« on: Thursday 02 January 14 15:57 GMT (UK) »
I have been looking at the Browne family of Wramplingham, Norfolk, recently.  William Browne was baptised there in 1785, son of William Browne and Elizabeth, nee Killingray (spinster)  Unable to find a marriage for William and Elizabeth, who were having children in the area from at least 1784 till 1798.

Mary, burial Jan 1784, Wramplingham
William, burial Jan 1784, Wramplingham
William, baptism 1785, Wramplingham
Mary, baptism 1791, Barford
Mary, baptism 1792, Barford
Sarah, baptism 1795, Barford
Mary, baptism 1798, Barford

In these records Elizabeth's maiden name is recorded.  There may be others which I haven't found as yet.

There are 2 more children, Robert born 1797, Wymondham and Thomas Spottiswood, born 1800, Wymondham, both recorded in Quaker records, mother's maiden name not given. There is also death 1802 of Elizabeth Browne, aged 41, wife of William Browne at Windham (Wymondham) and in 1820 the death of William Browne (not a member), aged 60, a tanner, at Wymondham, both recorded in Quaker records.

Looking for William Browne born c 1760 comes up with another Quaker record for birth in 1758 of William Browne to Zachary and Ann Browne at Windham.

My question is, how likely is it that a man born into a Quaker family would have several children baptised in C/E Church, followed by a child's birth recorded in Quaker Church,  then another C/E, then another Quaker record, with subsequent death/burials for his wife and himself recorded in a Quaker Church?

With a name such as Browne there may not be a definitive answer, but I have a feeling that these are all connected.  Any ideas?

Margaret

 :D :D

Thanks very much for that, Yokel.

So, if the marriage was 9 Jul 1776, there were probably more children before Mary, buried 1784.  And the Quaker birth recorded 1 Aug 1758 for William Browne, would make him only 17 at marriage, perhaps unlikely.
Also,  death in 1802 of Elizabeth Browne, aged 41, wife of William Browne at Windham (Wymondham)

Would make her about 15 or 16 at marriage in 1776 - there again, not impossible but perhaps unlikely.

Food for thought.

Happy New Year,
Margaret

Thanks for that, Trish

I had seen the previous baptisms in Wymondham, but without the mother's maiden name, with the surname of Brown/e and with not having the marriage date of parents, I wasn't sure that they belonged to 'my' family.

William 1779 and Mary 1783, baptised in Wramplingham, were possibly the ones that were buried in Wymondham in Jan 1784, though both were given as 'infant' -

Burial [?3rd  or 11th] Jan 1784
Willm Browne son of William and Elizabeth late Killingray, infant

Burial 15 Jan 1784
Mary Browne daur of William and Elizabeth late Killingray, infant

Now I know that there were at least 2 'William and Elizabeth Brown/e' families - the one having children between 1779 and 1798, and the Quaker family, children between 1797 and 1800.

A pity, thought I might have found my first Quaker family, but realised there were inconsistencies.
I've just checked Wymondham burials at familysearch, and age of Elizabeth Brown given clearly as 86 in 1822.

Thanks again for your help

I have only just read your enquiry about William and Elizabeth Browne who were Quakers.   These were my ggg grandparents.   Elizabeth's maiden name was Seaman.   I hope this helps.          Percyfol

Percyful,

First, a very warm welcome to Rootschat, it's a very friendly place if you have any queries.

Second, I came to the conclusion that 'my' William Brown/e and Elizabeth Killingray were C/E, having children between 1779 - 1798, whereas William Browne and Elizabeth (Seaman) were Quakers, having children between 1797 and 1800.

So no connection to you that I know of.
