Military pension records 1916-1923 to be released on 17 January
« on: Thursday 02 January 14 21:22 GMT (UK) »
I'll post a link in the Resources section when this actually goes live, but just to alert anyone who had relatives fight in the Easter Rising and/or War of Independence, the Pension records are to go online on the Military Archives site. So no more waiting for a year + for records after an application.
More from Claire Santry's excellent blog here

Happy days :)

This is great news but I wonder just how much will be online, I got my grandfathers records last May and the paper work goes up to 1984 (letter informing them of my grandmother's death as she inherited the pension) there was a lot of information apart from his application for a pension which has no military or historical relevance, assuming this is not put online it may be still worth applying for the full paper work.

Just been on this. Was hoping it would give me some info on a Great Uncle. All I ever knew of him was that he was in GPO 1916.
Just downloaded 2 files on him, just 100 pages in total. They go up to 1982 when his widow died - there is a note that there is a redaction in the file relating to his Grandchild so I guess it was the  letter informing them of this. Brilliant resource.

An excellent resource and useful reading

I had to laugh at reading a distant relatives by marraige letter to Dept regarding Pension and note to be passed on to minister
At the bottom
You might infrom him that I am the same XXX XXX who enjoyed his company in "Easter WeeK" 1916.

Know that is true.

Also good at fleshing out further relatives.

I applied for three sets of pension records in recent years and not one of the three is on-line!
Cannot find on the site exactly what order they are uploading records - so far unfortunately it has been of little immediate value only interest.

My Grandfather isn't there either or any of his comrades.
You could go around in circles trying to find a list of release dates but waste of time it's just not there.

Just to mention what I did come across was mention of my OH's grand-uncle
He is reputed to have refused to apply for a pension but he is mentioned in the records of others

There will be people who refused to apply for a pension on a point of principal and also others who left the country and didn't wish their location to be ever known.
