Isle of Man passenger lists to Australia
« on: Friday 03 January 14 12:41 GMT (UK) »
I'm been trying to locate an ancestor of mine who was supposedly born in the Isle of Man and migrated to Australia sometime between 1860 and 1866.

I’ve not been able to locate her on the incoming passenger lists for Australia so wondered if I could find her leaving the IOM.

What ports would she have travelled via to get to Australia and do passenger lists exist from these ports?

My ancestor's details:
Mary Elizabeth McVey (or McVey Smith)
Born about 1845, IOM
Father = John McVee (farmer)
Mother = Mary Elizabeth Macgee
Married in Australia in 1866

There were ships departing from the port of Ramsey in the Isle of Man to Australia in the 1860's, although Liverpool could be another possibility.

the ships from IoM ports to Australia were one-offs - eg the Vixen (http://www.manxnotebook.com/famhist/v04n3.htm#44-45 ) the nearest main port to the Island was Liverpool tho most Australia bound ships generally departed from the Thames ports (eg Gravesend) I would be interested in seeing any refs to Manx originating boats direct to Australia.
Anyway there are NO passenger lists to/from the Island, most of the sailings would be to the ports in NW England, some Irish ports and those in North Wales and the Clyde - remember that by 1870's the IoM was becoming a major holiday resort for the NW of England with the IoMSPCo running many boats.

Can you find your Mary in the 1851 census - McVey is not a Manx name and at that period was I think 100% Irish
any thing with a Manx Connection

Best fit I can find on 1851 census is:
Reference: Class: HO107; Piece: 2524; Folio: 399; Page: 11
Gritch Voor(?), Lonan, Isle of Man

McVey, John  Head  M  40  Lab at Laxey Mines  b Ireland
McVey, Elenor  Wife  F  40  b Ireland
McVey, John  Son  M  14  Lab at Laxey Mines  b Ireland
McVey, Mary  Daughter  F  8  b Ireland
Quayle, William  Wife's Son  M  23 Lab at Laxey Mines  b Lezayre, IoM
Cleator, John  Wife's Son-in-Law  M  22  Lab at Laxey Mines  b Braddan, IoM
Cleator, Anne  Wife's Daughter  F  25  b Lezayre, IoM

So, I would guess that this is Elenor's 3rd marriage, and John's 2nd? ;D

I wondered if Mary’s parents had remarried also. On a couple of her children’s birth certificates in Australia her name is recorded as “Mary Elizabeth Smith” and one record has her name as “Mary Elizabeth Smith McVey” .

I’ve not been able to find a birth/baptism certificate for her in the IoM or Ireland. I did find a marriage of John McVey and Mary Magee in Co. Down, Ireland but the date is 1860.

Is there any record of Mary Smith (b. 1845) in the 1851 or 1861 IoM census? Or  a marriage of McVey and Smith?
