Rose Margaret Luke b 1906 d 19?? MBE Uganda 1954
« on: Saturday 04 January 14 16:45 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

Having done a lot of research my many members of RootChat who I thank for their very hard work.

I have the following details and my assessment of what I consider.

Rose Margaret Luke was Personal Secretary to the Governor of Uganda Sir Andrew Cohen returned to England in Feb 1954 and resided with her father and mother till 1958 in Middlesex.

She was awarded MBE for her Overseas Service in 1962.

I am assuming that whilst in England that she retained either working for the OS in England or the Embassy in London.

After 1958 no trace of her was found on any Electoral Files in England.

I assume she returned to Uganda and worked for the new Governor Sir Frederick Crawford.

Why I assume this is because her Honour was services to Uganda and awarded in 1962.

But I can not prove this and was hoping that there may be some information would come from this Forum.

Is her name Rose Margaret or Margaret Rose?  I see the MBE was to Margaret Rose Luke.

In the previous link you have the names both ways - so I am just checking

Her Honours was Margaret Rose Luke

Have you checked on the National Archives UK?  I find the site very difficult to use, but it looks like the FC0 79 section deals with personnel stationed abroad, and perhaps they would have information on her.

Just out of interest my father received the MBE for Services to Swaziland and I know that he delayed his resignation so that he was still in service when the award was presented!  I always understood from him that if the award had been granted but he was no longer working for the Government he would not receive it!

Nookie,

Interesting your comments.

There is evidence that she was in Uganda up until say 1954-5. Returned to England on Union Castle and then evidence that she remained in UK till 1958 and then has vanished.

I believe if she was in Service maybe she remained in the OS in England That is why we have evidence.

I think she may have returned to Uganda in 1958 and then got het Honours for work done.

But that is why I am trying to trace her in 1958 onwards in Uganda.

I will try FCO 79 for possible information.

Good luck with navigating the National Archives site!  I found nothing on her name when I searched, but actually always work on a "hit and miss" system as I actually have no idea how to find anything on their site  :(

When she received her MBE she would have been 56 years old.  Surely she would have been either retired or about to retire by then?  What was the retirement age in the Government Services for women then?

As she would have received a pension from the Government is there not a way of tracing where she was through that avenue?
