Help finding a relative....a mystery!
« on: Saturday 04 January 14 18:40 GMT (UK) »
Any help will do!!

I am looking for a Margaret Robertson Mitchell, born Salford, England in 1905 to Scottish parents, Agnes Gillies Mitchell (nee Struthers) and Robert Mitchell from Falkirk, Scotland.

They emigrated to Sarnia, Ontario, Canada in 1913 from Greenock, Scotland.
Margaret making a return to Scotland in 1928 with her father after Agnes, her mother died.

Margaret then goes back to Canada in June 1929 and then returns back to Scotland in Nov 1929. This is the last I know of Margaret after this date. I have found her birth certificate, and all her passenger records.

All I can suggest is that she either stayed in Scotland, hence why I can not find anymore records or she got married in Scotland and went back to Canada.

It is a mystery within the family.

Any help, hints, clues or information would be highly appreciated.

Hi,

The 1921 census shows the family in Sarnia.  There is also a son named William Bryn (or Bryan) Mitchell, age 20.

Several other family members are with them.  Perhaps tracking some of them will help find your Margaret??

Is a brother in law William Robertson Struthers, 39.  His son William Robertson Struthers, 9.  They arrived in 1913 as well.

Mother in Law (?) Margaret Robertson 74.  Arrived in 1913.

Cousin Andrew Roberts 21, arrived in 1921.

Hi again,

Sarnia is right on the border with Port Huron Michigan.  People move back and forth a lot.  Don't forget to check American records too, especially from Michigan. :)

I would have a look at the Newington, Midlothian, 1982 death on Scotland's People.

Hi Radcliff....on the last known passenger list she is visiting a house in Glasgow. No name given and its 207 Gourlay Street, Springburn, Glasgow. I can not find out if it was a relative, hostel or anything else as I can not research it or who lives there. All I know it has been demolished since.

As for the death record that will be out of the question as she arrived back in Scotland 23 November 1929 with a new born baby that she had on the ship Athenia on the 18 November 1929. The reason I never mentioned the baby is of course I know where the baby went from here as she was adopted once arrived back in Scotland and the baby in question is my grandmother.

Flattybasher9 I will look at that record, thanks.

Wayne,

Agnes Mitchell (née Struthers) is my great-grandfather James' sister. I don't know if it will help you, but here is the information I have on Margaret Struthers and Agnes Struthers:

Children of James Struthers and Margaret Robertson all born in Falkirk, Sterlingshire, Scotland, were as follows:

Agnes Gillies Struthers was born on 3 September 1874. She married Robert Mitchell circa 1900.

John Struthers was born circa 1880. He married Nellie (--?--) before 1911. He immigrated on 27 April 1911 to Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. He died on 13 February 1954. He was buried after 13 February 1954 in Lakeview Cemetery, Sarnia, Lambton County, Ontario, Canada.

Children of Agnes Gillies Struthers and Robert Mitchell are as follows:

William B. Mitchell was born circa 1901 in Falkirk, Sterlingshire, Scotland.

Note: This information came to me from an Ed Strother, who manages the Wm. Strother Society.
He lives in the US, so he has spelled 'Stirlingshire' in the American fashion.

Hi Steve, welcome to Rootschat - yours is the dream post we all wish for!  Unfortunately, Wayneh83 hasn't been online since October last year.  So I have sent a PM alerting him/her to your post!

If you post two more entries on here, (a hi and a smiley will do it) in reply to this message, you will then be able to send a private message of your own. New members, as yourself, need to make 3 posts to a forum, in order to qualify for private message facility.  If you click on Wayne's user name, you will see "send private Message", just hit that, and you're on your way!

But you do need to do those two hello's first, to activate your PM facilities! 😄

Good luck!

Jeanne 😄
