Hughes family 1861 census ?
« on: Monday 06 January 14 02:30 GMT (UK) »
Hi  All...try as I might,,i cannot locate John and William Hughes  with mother Anne in the 1861 census,,,there is a possibility that they could be this family in 1851,,,i am trying to see if indeed the John,William and Anne in the 1871 census,,,are the John ,William and Rosana in the 1851 census. But I cant find a definite link. John and Elizabeth Hughes did baptize a daughter ,,  Rosanna,,in 1875,,,which is a link,,,,John Hughes b 1846/7  gives his fathers name as John,,an engine driver when he marries Elizabeth in 1867,,but where are any of these people in 1861???   cheers  GB.

Do you know who John married? There is this possible marriage shown on Ancestry at Manchester Cathedral

John Hughes 22 butcher of 63 Fleet Street father John Hughes engine driver
Elizabeth Barton or it could be Burton 25 of 61 Fleet street father George Barton/Burton porter

It seems to fit your 1871 census.

OK forget this as you already have it.

Have you John's birth certificate as that will give his father and mother's maiden name. A spinner and an engine driver seem to me to be rather different occupations.

The 1841 census also has John husband of Rosanna as a cotton spinner.

There is a tree on Ancestry about some of this family and they have the said John Hughes marrying a Rosanna Ritchie at the Cathedral in 1833. They have Rosanna as Ann linked to the same 1871 census as you have. It might be worth contacting the tree owner to see if you can compare notes. They appear to be following Joseph.

Hi, I know this post is from a while ago, but I've only just registered on here and saw your post.

You probably have found them by now, but just to say that they are in Summer Street in Poplar, London in 1861. Some of the kids were born in Bow, Middlesex.

Joseph and Anne (nee Manchester) are my 3 x Great Grandparents. I'm trying to do the Hughes family tree myself and it's fairly interesting.

Thank you and good luck

Mel

Hi Mel,

Welcome to Rootschat  :)

Let's hope you get a reply from the OP on this but meanwhile, can you post all details of the 1861 census here as it helps when others possibly connected to the family do a google search as it will bring them here.

Please include any variation in spelling.
