Wright family - Cheshunt
« on: Friday 10 January 14 09:20 GMT (UK) »
This is a long story but I'll try & keep it brief & to the point!
I have evidence that a John Wright, carpenter of Cheshunt apprenticed his son, Thomas Wright to, John Worsfold, master clockmaker of Dorking, Surrey for 7 years from 29/12/1736.
I've just found a marriage of Thomas Wright 'of Waltham', clockmaker to Sarah Lifford of Dorking, March 1744.  This was a clandestine marriage in London & I would assume that they both ran away from Dorking to marry as Sarah was underage & it would also be about the time that Thomas finished his apprenticeship.
The IGI gives three baptism's for this couple, Hannah, 9/7/1746, Thomas & John, 23/7/1751, all at the Presbyterian, Crossbrook St, Cheshunt.
I know that their son, John, later came to Dorking & was trading as a clockmaker between 1771 & 1828.
If anyone has some resources perhaps they could answer the following questions?
1.  Is there a baptism for Thomas s/o John, maybe about 1722?
2.  Are there any more baptism's for children of Thomas & Sarah or burials?
3.  I'm also looking for a marriage between their son, John & a Sarah.  John & Sarah had a Thomas Wright about 1775 & Ann Wright about 1776.  Both of these children are later found in Dorking & nearby Banstead but were not baptised in Surrey.
Lots of questions I know but hope someone can help,

Jane

I am also interested in John and Thomas Wright of Dorking, as I have a clock made by them. The movement has John's name engraved on it, while the dial has Thomas on it. The possible date is circa 1810, suggesting that Thomas was a younger brother or son of John. I can send pictures of the clock to anyone who has information on the makers.

Hi Patchett,
How wonderful you have a clock made by this family  :)
I can dig out my notes concerning the Wright family, clockmakers of Dorking, if it would be of any help?

Your notes certainly could be of help. I know little about the Wrights and the date of 1810 for my clock is approximate. I have always assumed that the name on the dial (Thomas) is the son or younger brother of the name on the movement (John), as John probably died and left some movements for the next proprietor to complete as saleable clocks.

Hi Patchett,
I haven't forgotten you, just madly busy at the moment with little time to myself to go through my notes,
