"Hillsgill" in Lesmahagow
« on: Monday 13 January 14 03:32 GMT (UK) »
Trying to find whether Hillsgill is an actual town or possibly the name of a house or hostel of some kind in the Lesmahagow area?  Have a relative John McDonald who died there in 1920 aged 39, with the witness being a Margaret Holmes, Guardian Daughter.  Not sure who she is either.  I have all details of his family members but just trying to identify Hillsgill.  John was a Subway Conductor if that is any help.
Thanks in advance for any advice!

Hi - looks like its an area, as there are Google refs to "Hillsgill, parish of Lesmahagow" & other entries indicating this.
Regards
Everlea.

Hillsgill is a farm or croft or cottage in the parish of Lesmahagow, though is it actually closer to the burgh of Lanark than to the village of Lesmahagow.

Go to http://www.geograph.org.uk/gridref/ns8442 and find Nether Affleck. Hillsgill is marked, but not named. It is represented by the pink square on the same side of the road, but past the bend in the road.

You can also see it named on the First Edition of the six-inch Ordnance Survey map. Go to http://maps.nls.uk/os/6inch/index.html and select 'as a seamless zoomable overlay ...' Type NS849429 in the box at top left labelled 'Gazetteer / NG Ref:' and hit 'Enter'. This will produce a map with Hillsgill in the middle. you may have to enlarge the view using the '+' key at top left. To the right of the '+' and '-' keys is a slider which you can use to compare the old map with the modern satellite view.
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

Was John married?

If not, Margaret may have been the daughter of a partner to whom he was guardian to (bringing her up)?

Have you found them in 1911 ?

Hi Rosinish and scotg,

Forgot I had this post on here!  No, John wasn't married but I did work out that Margaret Holmes had previously been a Margaret Hannah, daughter of the farmer Thomas Hannah, who as far as I know, owned the farm at Hillsgill.  Perhaps John knew the Hannah's or simply worked there...not sure!  Haven't managed to find John in the 1911 census yet.

Kind regards,
Andrea
