Christopher OGLESBY and Maryann HALPIN Dublin marriage
« on: Tuesday 14 January 14 20:25 GMT (UK) »
Any help would be appreciated as i have hit a brick wall regarding this couple.

I have traced by husband's Dublin roots back to Christopher Oglesby born c.1828, possibly Beresford Street from prison records. His first known child was born in November 1863 and baptised at St.Mary's Pro Cathedral. Mother named as Marianne HALPIN. Other children followed with both parents named as Christopher and Marianne.

Despite exhausting all free resources such as familysearch and irishgenealogy I can find no trace of a marriage.

Christopher died in 1899 and his occupation given as dealer. In his grave is a buried a Mary Ann Halpin aged 73 who died in 1923 and listed as a dealer's wife.

Any information on the marriage or either family would be appreciated. The addresses I have for the family include Gloucester Place and Beaver Street.

Many thanks.

Hi There

There is an 1863 marriage for a Christopher Oglesby on irishgenealgy but with a different wife.  It's a rareish name so seems a big coincidence but not all records are available.  Are you 100% sure that you are working with the right family ? On another not my great grandmother was a dealer on Moore Street and one of her friends was a Bridget Oglesby. ..... any connection do you think ?

Looks like there might be lots online for the family- for example:

Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Thanks for your replies.

Yes there are plenty of Oglesbys on familysearch. I have a lot of info. on their descendants but I need the marriage to get back further and know nothing on the Halpin side. I think the Christopher found on that site is likely to be my Christopher's son born in 1866.

Thanks for the 1863 marriage Tara. However on irishgenealogy there are children for a Christopher and Honoria and a Christopher and Marianne in the same time period at differing addresses.

I have 7 children to Christopher and Marianne between 1863 and 1878. A Bridget Oglesby is the last child I have and married a Henry Cowap. I expect if Bridget's married name was Oglesby there will be some connection. Do you know where she lived?

The posting on the genforum board is certainly our family but I didn't post it. I did email the person who posted it some time ago but never got a reply.

Any other thoughts would be appreciated.

also do you have Mary Anne on the census returns ?

a marriage may had been where she lived, or where she was from

wondering where she was born and also why she used her maiden name when a widow

Christopher is my husband's great great grandfather. His son Matthew is his great grandfather. His son Owen is his grandfather and his son Matthew is his father.

On the 1901 census there is a Maryane Oglesby with son Christopher, a widow and fish dealer. The ages are out from what I know but it could be her. There are no records for the same person in 1911.

Mary Ann Halpin was living in Railway Street in 1923 and died aged 73. In the same grave, together with Christopher Oglesby is an Eliza Halpin aged 60 in 1890, (A sawyer's wife) I wonder if this could be her mother? Christopher Oglesby of 2 Beaver Street was the informant of the death.

If the Mary Anne buried with him was Christopher's wife she would have been very young to have their first child in 1863. I wonder if he married twice.

Many thanks.
