John Dawson born abt 1816
« on: Friday 17 January 14 18:05 GMT (UK) »
I'm looking for the parents and the place of birth of a John Dawson born about 1816!

Not an easy one I know but, I don't know where to start.

I have very little information other than that below:

- Born about 1816
- Occupation Cattle Dealer
- Fathers name from wedding certificate also John Dawson Cattle Dealer
- 1841 Census Ryall, Northumberland occupation Cattle Dealer
- 1851 Census Blossom Street, York occupation Traveller and Cattle Dealer
- 1855 Marriage to Frances Appleyard in York
- 1861 Census Drovers Inn, York Publican
- 1871 Census Boot and Shoe, Tadcaster Publican and Cattle Dealer
- 1873 Passes away in the Tadcaster Union Workhouse (Hospital)

In all the census returns he was pretty consistant in stating Scotland, other than that there's no clues as to a birthplace.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi David,

Did John and his wife have any children. Sometimes their names can give clues to the grandparents names. The Scots tended to have a naming pattern which you may be aware about and middle names can also be family names. Of course not everyone followed the pattern.
Just thought I'd suggest you look at his family's names,
Looby :)

Looby,

They did but unfortunately they didn't follow that pattern!

They were:

Thomas 1858
Anna Maria 1860
Harriet 1861
William 1865
John 1866
Fred 1868
Fanny 1871

Having said that, I've just done another trawl accross the web and found a "John Hutchinson Dawson" with the same parents as the others born in 1863.

Sorry  :-[.
It was worth a try....and at least you found the boy John who must have died young if they called another son John in 1866.

What does it say for his father's name on his 1855 marriage certificate?
AYRSHIRE - Strachan, McCrae, Haddow, Haggerty, Neilson, Alexander
ABERDEENSHIRE (Cruden and Longside) - Fraser, Hay, Logan, Hutcheon or Hutchison, Sangster
YORKSHIRE (Worsbrough) - Green, Oxley, Firth, Cox, Rock
YORKSHIRE (Royston and Carlton) - Senior, Simpson, Roydhouse, Hattersley

There is an older John Dawson with a woman (perhaps his wife) Margaret at Alnwick, Northhumberland on the 1841 England Census. Both have years of birth 1781 and both are born in Scotland. Have you looked at them on original? Could be John's father and mother came to Northumberland too :-\  https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/M7W8-53L

Long shot I know but with so little info they might be worth a look. There are a few other Scottish Dawson's in the area too.
Looby :)

Thanks for the tip but, this John was a Clothier, I've looked at the others on Ancestry but it doesn't give their occupations for those still in Scotland.
