Alexander McClymont Beaumont

I am trying to trace the birth and therefore confirm the parents of Alex. McC. Beaumont.
Census documents suggest he was born variously in Scotland Kirkcaldy, Fife and Ballantrae, Ayrshire and in Ireland. His marriage certificate confirms that he is 24 years old and his Father to be William Beaumont. From his age I can determine his birth year as 1854.
I have identified a William born in Straiton Ayrshire who as a miller may have gone to Ireland during the potato famine and returned to Fife around 1856/1858. This is suggested in 1861 census which shows Alex's siblings being born in Ballantrae , Ireland and finally Fife in Scotland although the 1871 census shows all siblings as being born in Scotland!!

Problem is I cannot find a record for Alex's birth in either Scotland or Ireland ?

Any ideas ??

Hi stagaln8

You may not find a birth or christening entry unfortunately  :-\ Official registration only started in Scotland from 1855.

What else do you have on Alexander? Did he stay and marry in Scotland? Scottish certs post the start of official registration from 1855 are excellent and should include parents' full names.

I can see this family in 1871:

William Beaumont 46 flour miller b. Stainton (likely Straiton), Ayrshire
Elizabeth Beaumont 46 b. Kirkcolm, westershire (likely Wigtownshire?)
John Beaumont 22 b. Ballantrae, Ayrshire
William Beaumont 20 b. Ballantrae, Ayrshire
Alexander Beaumont 16 b. Ballantrae, Ayrshire
Robert Beaumont 15 b. Ballantrae, Ayrshire
George Beaumont 13 b. Abbotshall, fifeshire
Mary Beaumont 10 b.Abbotshall, fifeshire https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/XYPY-P94

Address: Mill Street, Kirkcaldy Fife

Birth https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/XYYJ-C86 and a death here https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/XBX3-646 (likely unnamed baby, died on the same day of birth  :'().

1861:

William Beaumont 38 oatmeal miller b. Straton, Ayrshire
Elizabeth Beaumont 37 b. Ballantrae, Ayrshire
John Beaumont 13 b. Ballantrae, Ayrshire
William Beaumont 11 b. Ireland
James Beaumont 9 b. Ireland
Alexander Beaumont 7 b. Ireland
Robert Beaumont 5 b. Ireland
George Beaumont 3 b. Abbotshall, fifeshire
Mary Beaumont 8 Months b. Abbotshall, fifeshire

Address: House At West Mills, Linktown, Abbotshall, Kirkcaldy

Does look like family headed off to Ireland pre 1851 and then returned by 1856. Cannot see them in Scotland in 1851.

Hi Monica, Alex married a Sarah Guthrie in Newcastle-on-Tyne in 1878 so now I'm into England records and it's easy going from then on. Other data,  census stuff, sibling info. etc. allows to take that leap of faith to tie Alex to William of Straiton  I just wanted to get "certified" confirmation !

The fact that 3 or 4 of the census puts Alex's birth in Ireland probably is correct but......

thanks for your interest

James

Have found Alex travelling to Quebec, presumably emigrating,  on the SS Teutonic out of Liverpool on June 29th 1912.
There is also a record of a Mary Beaumont (age 16) going to Montreal with a 1yr old child in May of 1912 on board SS Laurentic  Mary's emigration does fit family legend although there is no mention of a child. !

So I guess we are now looking "across the pond".

Any ideas?
