Look up for Ephraim Lawton (Photographer) and Soloman Poppelsdorf
« on: Monday 20 January 14 13:44 GMT (UK) »
I wonder if anyone could assist me or can look up details in the Channel Islands

I am researching Essex Photographers and have an Ephraim Lawton (b. abt 1813 in London, England British Subject – d. 17 May 1901 in Mile End Road, Middlesex).
I cannot find details of his marriage to Caroline (b. abt 1829 in Whitechapel, Middlesex (British Subject)) or birth/baptism of their 3 children – Abraham, Louis and Betsy (all born in the Channel Islands).

I believe he was originally a Master Chair and Sofa Marker/Carver and Upholster, who moved with his family from Jersey, Channel Islands to Bethnal Green and then to Southend on Sea, Essex.
In Southend, from 1874 he is shown as a Photographer and seems to have been based at Station Road and Cliff Town Road, Southend until about 1891.
There are references to Mr Ephraim Lawton having been one of the founder members of the East London Synagogue.
(Does anyone know where I can confirm this?)
He seems to have remarried to Mary Ann Taversham (no details) and her daughter Susannah (Taversham/Lawton)
(b. 1846 in Stepney, London - d. 18 Mar 1896 in Croydon, Surrey) is shown in the 1881 census in Southend. She is married to Soloman Poppelsdorf (Popelstopp) (b. abt 1851 in The Netherlands – d. 1883 in Mile End Old Town, London). He is also a Photographer, but I can find nothing about him.

I not sure, but think Ephraim’s father could be John Lawton (b. abt 1823 in St Georges East, Middlesex) married to Jane (b. abt 1831 in London, Middlesex). He is shown as a Master Chair Maker in Jersey, Channel Islands (1851).

I would be most grateful for any information on Ephraim Lawton’s family and career.
