Don't know where to ask this..... sorry
« on: Monday 20 January 14 16:20 GMT (UK) »
Hi,
For some time I've being trying to find anything to do with GG Aunt Emma Ellen Feary. I have her in 1871 census at the age of 11 (listed as Emma Fearey) but nothing since. Just now I've found something that may be of relevance but I'm not quite sure what it means.

In the Hull Packet and East Riding Times from 1873 there is a column called Shipping Intelligence which, I presume, lists ships into and out of Hull. The transcript says this.....

"JANUARY 1: - Arrived: Emma, Feary, Caen; Hawk ss, Tatter, Amsterdam; Helen McGregor ps, Barron,Hamburg; ..... Sailed:  "     and from there it lists a number of ships which sailed that day.

Can anyone shed some light on this?

Thanks
Denise

The way I'm reading it is that on Jan. 1 1873 she arrived from Caen in France.

I've been looking at the newspaper via my library link and see that Arrived: Emma, etc. occurs a number of times over the years. I think that it might be  a vessel - possibly a small fishing boat  :-\

"JANUARY 1: - Arrived: Emma, Feary, Caen;

Just to add to what  Gadget has said - I'd suggest that Feary is the surname of the Master of the vessel.

First of all does Emma in 1871 live anywhere near Hull? In 1881 are the rest of the family still at same address? Have you looked for marriages and/or emmigration for Emma. Unlikely her name at age 13 would be used as Emma Feary. More likely Miss Emma Feary or just Miss Feary.

That looks like 3 ships off a list that arrived in Hull that day to me - I would suggest that the Surname is of who`m the ship is registered to ..
Emma -  Feary from Caen
Hawk SS (steam ship )  Tatter from  Amsterdam
Helen McGregor PS ( passenger ship )  Barron - from  Hamburg
then it states - Sailed ...so another list of the ships that sailed

just a coincidence that the registered owner  of "Emma " is named Feary ....

I agree with the others that this is a list of ships arriving at Hull, but it is quite possible that mr feary named his ship after his wife or daughter, it was not unusual.

Feary is the name of the Captain not the owner. The name of the ship was EMMA. I suspect she was engaged in the Home trade. Trading to other UK ports and the near Continent. Very doubtfull she was a fishing boat.
However of no consequence to the original poster.
