Lot Cumberland aka Combdon

Looking for info on my great, g, g. grandfather. Here is what is known about him. Lot Cumberland of Devonshire, England,(my mother said he was from Cumberland)  was recruited in 1786 by the Slade Merchants to work in the Fogo Island, Newfoundland fishery. He was hired as a servant by John Symes (Simms) who had established an independent fishery in Fogo or Joe Batt’s Arm in 1783. He married in Newfoundland, Canada which was formerly a british colony. Anyone have any info on him? Thanks so very much and have a great day.

not a direct answer to your question , looking in parish records for both combdon and Cumberland both names show but no LOT .
it may be worth your while getting in touch with the devon family history society as some of the records coming up have been from there transcriptions go to www.devonfhs.org.uk 
also tried Cumberland as surname but no births show a few marriages and no deaths in Cumberland county

Ty for the replies, two of them weren't old enough but Tmo I will look into the devonfhs.org.uk, to see what I can find there. With literally no record keeping back in the day, I was lucky to get so far back. Have a great day.

Ty all for your replies. I wonder if there are records with passenger lists from back in 1786 from the uk to Newfoundland? Maybe I can search there for when he came across as he was recruited in 1786  and I am sure Slade Merchants (He was hired by John Symes aka Simms) had regular shipping, maybe even from Poole from whence a lot of new settlers came.
