Hi ,thank you for your reply

I am looking for John Hughes son of Hugh Roberts.    (Marriage cert)

John Hughes died in Heneglwys, 16 June 1859 age 39 , so that rules out the 1818 baptism.!  regards

:) Hi again, so on his marriage cert he has Hugh Roberts shown as father, which suggests John was illegitimate and was aware that Hugh Roberts was his father, does this sound plausible? The death of John, I would not take as definite that he was actually aged 39 it could well be the informant thought that was his age? Can you give the details shown on the marriage certificate for both parties, and is he the John Hughes with wife Catherine and children in Heneglwys 1851 aged 30 Census ref HO107/2520/121/5

Hi   census 1851  John and  Catherine Hughes is correct.

In Wales we have a patronymic  naming system.  Sons can take their father's christian name as their surname which I assumed is the case here.  It can be very confusing.  Entry in parish records  for baptisms usually state if the child is illegitimate.  This is not the case here.

I did wonder if the baptism took place in a Nonconformist chapel!   Thank you for your thoughts
  Regards

Fair comment, so the marriage cert, can you give details please, and just in case this could be a marriage that fits an earlier birth:-

Hugh Roberts to Hannah Hughes 14th November 1820 Llandrygarn?
Did John marry Catherine Williams 8th May 1849; Llaniestyn?
