Thank-you KGarrad, that means they must have married in the IOM.  I couldn't find an marriage entry, I'll keep looking.

Yes, great newspaper article Sandra, I've been all the way to the top of the Laxey Wheel too when I visited the Island a few years ago - so I'm really chuffed with this news.  You've done loads of work on my behalf and I'm very grateful.  By the way Hall Caine was the nephew of my 3xGt Grandmother, a very interesting find!  I've been trying to find information on her siblings, his family is well documented, not so for her other siblings unfortunately!

I'll try and digest all this information now and try and get my head around it all.

Many thanks,
Sue   :)

Yes, quite enjoyed this Sue, its been very interesting. Haven't quite worked out the 3 sons and 5 daughters who survived her. Seem to be a son short and need marriage info for a couple of daughters.

Do you remember the name given to the Laxey Wheel?

The Lady Isabella - named after the wife of the Lt-Governor - hence the proliferation of Isabella's om the Isle of Man.

IoM Civil Registration didn't get under way until 1878 - so ManxBMD will be of no use to you.

Try the iMuseum (.im), click on Family Search.
(I can do newspaper lookups for you - if you visit the actual building, newspaper access is free for 24 hours!)

Also worth trying is the Lawsons micro-site:

I've had great fun tonight with all these new discoveries, adding them to my tree, and filling in loads of gaps.

Thank-you both for your invaluable help, this site is truly wonderful.

I'm a very happy bunny.   :-*

Possibility - There is this death record for a John George Caine - aged 73 years - 1946 - South Melbourne, Victoria. (that would mean around 1873 and your John George was 1868  ???)
Registration Number: 7563
This John George and wife Minnie appear to be living at 236 Bridport Street Fawkner Victoria South Melbourne in 1914/1919.  John would be an engine driver.

1931 John George is on his own at 87 Cecil Street South Melbourne - engine driver. (no Minnie listed)

1937 John George at 71 Thistlethwaite Street - engine driver.

1943 John George at 4 Ingles Street - engine driver.

Hi there,

The Victoria BDM certificates are full of very detailed information, and can be downloaded immediately to your computer.  There is a cost, $Au 20.

Here is the Rootschat thread with info as to what to expect on the Vic certs.  (As detailed as Scottish ones, or even more so !)

http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,373754.0.html

Sandra has posted the reg. no for John George CAINE's death in 1946.   That reg. no is needed when you go to order the dc.   Of course, death certs are 'second' hand info, so are not as reliable as say a marriage cert.  BUT .... :)

The link to order and download :

Cheers,  JM
