Murder/suicide after Guildford wedding 1901.
« on: Saturday 01 February 14 15:06 GMT (UK) »
I'm looking for further information on an incident that took place in our family in November 1901, and was reported in many papers at the time.
Briefly the story, as far as I can tell, is as follows:

Florence McQuillin (18) and Samuel Turner (25), who were cousins, attended a wedding in Guildford (as guests) in November 1901.....possibly the 9th or thereabouts.

Samuel was in love with Florence but she did not want him.  Her Father, Stephen McQuillin also disapproved of Samuel and there seems to have been a fight at the wedding, and Samuel was accused of assaulting Florence at some point (not sure if at the wedding, or prior to the wedding, resulting in the fight)
Florence took a summons against Samuel, who then threatened to kill her, and her Father.
Two weeks after the wedding, on Monday 25th November, Samuel arrived at the house where Florence lived and shot her, and then shot himself.  He died instantly, but she was wounded badly, and died some months later.....this was all witnessed by my Grandmother, who was Florence's sister.
Although the wedding was in Guildford, the Mcquillins lived in Lambeth, where the shooting took place, and the Turners probably lived fairly close by ....but not sure on that.
We know some of the family history and addresses etc, but we don't know any details about the wedding....which church in Guildford....was it a family wedding, or were they guests at a common friend's wedding?
One other family name that could be involved in the marriage is "Holman".....but it is a bit of a long shot.

If anyone has any information on this it would be great to hear about it..... I can provide some further details if it helps.
Many thanks,
Sami.

Hi and welcome to Rootschat Sami. ;D

You have posted on the wrong board (The Lighter Side) so I will ask a moderator move the post to an appropriate board.

You may need to give quite a few more details, IE Parents, siblings names as long as all deceased, to get to the bottom of your question.

Hi Sami

Welcome to rootschat  :)

This article appeared in The Times
Attempted Murder And Suicide
The Times (London, England), Tuesday, Nov 26, 1901; pg. 12; Issue 36622.

A young man called at a house in Thorne Street, Wandsworth Road yesterday morning to see his sweetheart, shot her then turned the revolver on himself. The name of the young woman is Florence McQuillan. She is 18 years of age and lived with her parents at Thorne Street. The young man died a few minutes after the occurrence.  It appears that the young man watched Mr McQuillan leave his house to go to work then knocked at the door. On entering he asked his sweetheart Miss McQuillan whether she was going to the police court and on being told to mind his own business and leave the house took a revolver from inside his coat saying "There will be two of us who will not attend the court today" and fired twice at her. The bullets entered the girls face near the eye. Miss McQuillin has been going in fear of her life a long time past and her father had to go to her place of business each evening to escort her home. The man was to have appeared at the Police court yesterday on a charge of threatening Miss McQuillans life.

Ah, thanks Neil.......wasn't really sure where to put this......can you give me some idea as to where it should have been........it certainly isn't what I would call a "light" topic!

And thanks Rosie....just spotted your reply as I was typing.....yes, I have some details like this from the papers, but there are probably ones that I haven't seen......many  thanks.

Sami.

The man was to have appeared at the Police court yesterday on a charge of threatening Miss McQuillans life.

Does it state anywhere whether the police court was in Lambeth or Guildford

Re the timing of the wedding - quote "Two weeks after the wedding, on the 25th November...."

One newspaper report dated 2 December reads ".... a quarrel occurred during a wedding at Guildford, which continued until a fortnight ago, when he assaulted her" This assault would be around the 18th November.
The shooting incident occurred on the 25th November.

Cannot pin the wedding date from the above?
