« on: Saturday 01 February 14 15:45 GMT (UK) »
Now - here's a puzzle. (all on Ancestry public tree 'Gargrave')

James Young (1828 Giggleswick - ?) m Jane Lofthouse (Bpt 28/9/1823 Gargrave -?) on 17 Mar 1849 St Andrews, Gargrave
Children - all Bpt StAndrews Gargrave
Sarah Ann 12 Aug 1849 PR : d of  James  Jane  Gargrave  book-keeper   BMD 1849 Q3 Skipton
Mary Emma 5 Jan 1851 PR : d of  James  Jane  Gargrave  book-keeper   BMD 1850 Q4 Skipton
William Alfred 31 Oct 1852 : PR : d of  James  Jane  Gargrave  book-keeper   BMD 1852 Q4 Skipton
Francis James 10 Feb 1856 : PR : d of  James  Jane  Gargrave  book-keeper  BMD 1855 Q4 Skipton
Alice Elizabeth 23 Oct 1859 : PR : d of  James  Jane  Gargrave  book-keeper NOT FOUND

and from Census
Sarah Elizabeth abt 1861 Eccles  BMD 1861 Q4 Manchester
Charles Henry abt 1863 Gargrave BMD not identified and no entry in Gargrave PR

Alice Elizabeth on 1861 and 1871 Census says 'Santander, Spain' and after her marriage continues to state 'Spain'
On 1851 James is 'Railway Time Keeper'
On 1861 James is 'Railway Agent' in Llanelli, and 2 doors away from another family 'Railway Engineer' with a child born in Spain.
On 1871 James is 'Contractors Agent - unemployed'.

SO - what were they doing in Spain? Was James involved in the building of the Settle & Carlisle?

Anyone able to add anything would be greatly appreciated

Thanks

Allan

 - interesting obituary for a civil engineer which mentions work done in the area shortly before James Young seems to have been out there.  It was almost certainly for work - British engineers were engaged on railway projects in a number of places in Europe at about this time, and it's not unusual to find several men from the same area appearing with kids b. France or Spain in the censuses as they may have already been employed by the same company or recruited from the same area.  Often they were only there for a couple of years - either they were only required during the construction phase, or only while locals were trained up after which it was cheaper to hire them instead.

Consular BMD index shows "Jane Young" b. 1855-1859 (exact years not given on these indexes), registered Santander, Spain Vol 2/949  (these records can be purchased from the GRO)

She's the only registration in Santander under surname Young.  It's possible that this is Alice under another name, or another child (b. between Francis and Alice?) who perhaps died on the way back home (or someone entirely unrelated, of course).

Since Alice was apparently baptised upon their return in 1859, it may be that she was born shortly before they left and therefore wasn't registered in Spain at all.

There is an interesting book in the 'Open Library' project
https://archive.org/download/storyofrailwaypi00sneliala/storyofrailwaypi00sneliala.pdf

Page 132 has the story of the Santandar and Alar Railway and has more to say on the death of Mr Jee to which the earlier link was posted.
