Thomas Mellor Baptism, Moston Manchester, 1740s.
« on: Monday 03 February 14 13:03 GMT (UK) »
Hi all,

Just found that my 5x gt grandfather was from Moston in the parish of Manchester & would have been born in the 1740s. However in reading about Moston, I've found that there wasn't a church there then, didn't get its own church until 1867. Does anyone know where the baptism would have taken place?

Thomas married Hannah Johnson at Manchester Cathedral on 4th June 1770, I have the original marriage record off Ancestry.

If this baptism is found it would enable me to push this part of my tree further back,  as it was looking difficult until finding the info re Moston.

Many thanks in advance.

Kind regards

David

The marriage only gives his place of residence at the time of the marriage as Moston, it is not necessarily where he was born.  :-\

Hi Rosie,

Many thanks for your reply, very much appreciated.

I know that Moston is his place of residence at time of marriage, but am looking to see if there is anything just in case. His wife Hannah was shown as of Stretford & there is a baptism there for a Hannah Johnson in 1748. They settled in Stretford after marriage.

My thanks again.

Kind regards

David

Hi Garstonite,

Many thanks for that, much appreciated.

Just looking at your link, I see that in the 16th century, the linen treatment industry was introduced to Moston with the washing & bleaching of fabric. Thomas's occupation at marriage was Whitster.

Whitster (Whitester) - Someone who bleached/whitened linen cloth.

I feel that I am onto something with this.

My thanks again.

Kind regards

David

Hi David I believe we are related. Thomas Mellor and Hannah Johnson appear in my tree too. I would love to hear from you as am stuck on this level of the tree.
Thanks in anticipation

Hi Karen & Radcliff,

Many thanks indeed for your replies, much appreciated.

My apologies for the tardy reply, I haven't logged in to RootsChat for a few weeks as have been busy with other things.

Karen, wonderful to hear from you, I would be more than happy to share what I have. Unfortunately I still haven't located a baptism for Thomas Mellor as yet but I am still looking!

Thomas & Hannah had 11 children all born/baptised in Stretford as follows:

William Mellor (1770-1845) Married Martha Ashcroft in 1795 & then Ann Fox in 1829.
Samuel Mellor (1773-?) Married Ann Brownhill in 1799.
Mary Mellor (1776-by 1780?)
Francis Mellor (1777-?)
Mary Mellor (1780-?)
John Mellor (1782-1851) Married Elizabeth Bancroft in 1806. (My 4x gt grandparents)
Thomas Mellor (1784-?) Married Ann ?
James Mellor (1787-?) Married Ann Fallows in 1815.
Nathan Mellor (1788-by 1789?)
Nathan Mellor (1789-1853) Married Margaret Fallows in 1814.
Hannah Mellor (1792-?)

I would be happy to share further details as needed. From which of Thomas & Hannah's children do you descend?

Radcliff, many thanks posing those baptisms. As you can see from the list above I have all the children of Thomas & Hannah. Gained from literally trawling the original parish register entries on Ancestry! ;D

Kind regards

David

Hi there,
Thanks for getting back to me my relatives are William Mellor and Martha Ashcroft. Until recently I knew nothing of William's siblings!. The Fallows keep cropping up too. I believe they all lived on Higgins Lane Stretford.I have just received my DNA results from Ancestry which are fascinating but sent me on another trail! Apparently a 2 nd cousin is related I think by Wilkinson name but they all live in Yorks and my family are Lancs. His name is Paul A Wakefield. He hasn't got a tree yet though. Anyway keep looking there are people out there and we need to find them!
Regards Karen
Btw William is my 4 X grt grandfather
