Looking for David Moug
« on: Tuesday 04 February 14 10:08 GMT (UK) »
David Moug, son of David Moug and Margaret Guthrie, baptised in Aberlemno 1775, died in Montrose 1859. I have seen the originals of the baptism record and death certificate (which gives his father's name as James, but no matter).

He married Isabella Robertson in 1810 and had six children: Alexander 1811, David 1813, Ann 1815, Isobel 1817, Janet 1821, and James 1823. First two born in Montrose, the others in Dun.

Is he the 65-year-old David Moug in Dun in the 1841 census, with wife Jean, 55? Are they David Moug and Jane White, married in Montrose in 1841?

Lastly, I cannot find David at all in the 1851 census on SP. Even searching for Da* M*g aged over 50 produces nothing. Can anyone suggest what ultra-creative spelling variant might have been used?

Hi

There is a David Mong living in Dun in 1851 b Aberlemno 1775 an ag lab at Cottar House of Fordhouse with wife Isabella b 1785 Kinneff Kinkardineshire, daughter Ann 36 b Dun, grandson James Mitchell 2 b Montrose and granddaughter Jane Sherriff b Dun 4 mo.

Perhaps if you search for James Mitchell on SP it will lead you to the original image.

Thank you, William, that looks like them. Nevertheless, even using James Mitchell, I still cannot find them on SP. I think I will have to have a look at the microfilm.

BTW I have now established that David Moug and Jane White are a different couple altogether.

Hi

Don't know if this helps but searching for Jane Sherriff using soundex on SP comes up with one hit.

Hi,
The David and Jean Moug you mention on the 1841 Census are living at Fordes Cott Bank, Dun which looks suspiciously like the address of David Mong from 1851 listed by Millmoor.
Looby :)

Yes, thanks, Looby. I have seen that.

However David Moug and Jean/Jane White had five children between 1849 and 1859, and in 1851 they were in Marykirk, Kincardineshire, David aged 40 and Jean aged 35.

I speculate that the Jane with David at Fordes in 1841 is perhaps an error and it should have been Isabella.

Not if you narrow it down to under 1 year. There is one hit in Dun for Jane Sherriff using soundex, but she is aged at least 15.

Now looking for another David Moug! This one is the one married to Jane White. He died in Montrose in 1883 and she died in 1903. but I can't find them in 1881, either on SP or on the LDS CD-ROM.

What is it about these Moug/Muggs, I wonder?

Hi

The transcribers have come up with a variety of versions of Moug. David and Jane have been transcribed as Mong but in 1881 it seems to be Maig! David is 71 b Carrieston and an ag lab, Jane is 67 b England, son David b Marykirk 21 an ag lab, Magdlin Will 2 mo a boarder b Montrose and James Ramsey a lodger aged 26 b Kirriemiui and a millar. Address Arrats mill cottage., Brechin.
