Hi Barbara

Not sure if you've resolved this already.

I'm researching this family for a friend and this thread came up on a Google search.

On FIBIS there is a reference to an entry in the Asiatic Annual Register recording the marriage of J Stevens to Louisa Whitehill, 3rd June 1800 in Mahe:

Thanks Gaie.

It is a long while since I looked at this family so will check and get back to you.  Looks very promising!

What is your friend's link with the Whitehills?

Well Gaie, I don't know how I missed that on FIBIS as it is a site I use often. I am sure it is the right marriage. I can't find it in the British India Ecclesiastical records on FindMyPast although I have all the baptisms of James' and Louisa's  children.

Do let me know if there is anything I can help you with.

I am researching a brief biography of John Whitehill Stevens for the local historical society. He was born in 1811 in Tellicherry, India, son of James Stevens and Louisa Whitehill. He was in Australia in the 1840s and early 1850s before moving to London. He died there in 1891.
I have constructed a tree of several generations for John and his siblings and would be happy to swap information.

Hi

Very happy to share information.  Have just returned from holiday so it may be a few days before I can check what I have.

My recollection is that John W Stevens was the brother of Louisa Stevens who married into the Lewin family. I think John had 2 sons one was a vicar and one was an Army Officer.

Hi again.

Brief details of what I have.

James Stevens m Louisa Whitehill 3 June 1800 and they had 7 children: Joanna Maria, Louisa, Ann, Fanny, Stephen James, Charlotte and John Whitehill.  I have further information on Joanna who married Malcolm Lewin and on Stephen James.  Fanny died in 1816.  I have no more information on the other 3 girls and very little on John Whitehill.

I have not tracked down a copy of the marriage of James to Louisa but it was reported in the Asiatic Annual Register.

Louisa was the daughter of Stephen Whitehill and Juliana Ringrose who married 6 July 1778.  I have 7 children for them.

Stephen was the son of Charles Whitehill and his second wife Sarah Law.

James Stevens was the son of John Stevens and Joanna surname unknown as yet.  he had one brother and one sister as far as I know.

Happy to expand.  Please let me know what you have.

Barbara

Edit: Sorry - James Stevens was the son James and Joanna.
