Myson and Boyton - Bishops Stortford
« on: Monday 10 February 14 10:49 GMT (UK) »
William Myson was baptised in Bishops Stortford on 18 Jan 1818 parents : John and Rebecca (maiden name Boutel). Mary Ann Boyton was bapt in Bishops Stortford on 25 Jan 1818 - parents Henry and Millie (maiden name Wisby). In 1841 William was living with his parents, Mary Ann was a live in servant with a family in B Stortford. In 1851 they were married and had four children. The oldest was 8 (birth reg Q1 1843 in B Stortford). The only likely marriage I can find is in Southwark Q4 1842. Is it likely that a couple from BS would go all the way to London to marry? Given the dates Mary Ann would be well advanced in her pregnancy.
Another possibly related puzzle - A William Myson Boyton was buried on 4 Aug 1839 in BS. He was aged 2. No birth registration for him on GRO, but likely he was born just before registration started. There is a baptism for a William Boyton (without a middle name) on Sept 10 1837 in BS, parents William and Mary occupation collar maker. I cannot find a William Boyton married to a Mary in 1841 who would be this poor child's parents so it looks like he could be my couple's first child born out of wedlock. The baptism record does not mention the child was base born / illegitimate. One definition of collar maker is a maker of horse collars or harness. In 1841, My William Myson's occupation is saddler. In 1851 and 1861 he is a railway porter, in 1871 he is described as harness maker (late).

Thank you very much, so definitely my couple. Thomas Boyton was Mary Ann's brother. Don't know who the other witness was - probably just a friend or landlady. But I wonder why they went to London to get married.

Maybe they were working there - however briefly?
Maybe parents didn't approve?

Possibly parents disapproved, particularly if William Myson Boyton was their child

Even more convinced the Southwark marriage is the right one. Just found a marriage between Mary Ann Myson and William Deville in the same church in 1842 but a few months earlier than William Myson. Mary Ann's father also John Myson occ carrier. Later censuses confirm both William Deville and Mary Ann b Bishops Stortford. One witness to the marriage was John Myson, could be her brother or father, but I think brother more likely.
In 1851 the Devilles have a daughter Emily age 9, her baptism was 15 May 1842, could she be the reason they married a long way from BS?
