Mystery.. What became of Mary Wilkinson nee (Parr,Burtonwood, Bowen)....
« on: Wednesday 12 February 14 18:34 GMT (UK) »
Hi everyone,

I'm not sure if this request is on the right board!!... And if it is i'm open to best suggestions..

I’m revisiting research from years ago on my 4 x Great Grandmother Mary Parr who i believe was born in 1815 in Lancashire.

By 1861 Mary had married three times and had become a widow at 46 years of age. I’m hoping that the helpful people on this forum may assist in unravelling where she came from and what eventually happened to her...

Facts

Mary first appeared on the birth certificate of my 3 x G Grandmother Alice Bowen who was born in Norton Street, Salford in 1842.  The details recorded of her mother (Mary) were as follows:-
“Mary Bowen lately Burtonwood formerly Parr”..

Her 2nd husband was John Bowen who she married at Manchester Cathedral on 17th May 1840. Mary’s father was recorded as “Robert Parr” a Gardener.  Mary was recorded as “Mary Burton” a widow of “full age” so i looked for an earlier marriage and found the following:-

23 June 1834 William Burtonwood marriage to “Mary Parr “ in Warrington, Cheshire which i’m not convinced of.

It would appear that Mary’s 2nd husband John Bowen died in 1847.  Mary later married Joseph Wilkinson on 24th August 1858 in Manchester.  (Her father Robert Parr is recorded as a Farmer on this  certificate)

Sadly Joseph Wilkinson, Mary’s 3rd husband died the following year (1859) age 33yrs!
Mary Wilkinson next appears on the 1861 census, a widow living on Springfield Lane, Salford employed as a shop provisions keeper age 46yrs.

I have no further information and would be very grateful for any assistance in identifying her parents and place of birth and what happened to her after 1861 which was the only census record i could find her on.. (In Salford library records)

I was considering splitting the research but thought it would be better keeping the information on one post so people could try and make some sense of her antecedants..

Thanks in anticipation for any help

Regards

John

Helen, Suz

Yes, great finds.. The family did live at Norton Street in Salford and yes Mary's daughter Alice married a royle..

Calteath always confused and eluded me.. Still can't pin her birthplace down..

what about Culcheth, Lancashire. This is what google suggests when I type in Cultheth.
http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/LAN/Culcheth/

John Thomas marries Matha Elizabeth woods  I've followed them, both die in 1890's (if you dont have details I'll post them for you but seems pointless to spend ages typing if you have them and are just trying to find Mary
Mary doesnt show up with them and Alice and ALL her family seem to be avoiding me at this point

I have 'culcheth' as a possible birthplace for Mary but can't find the source.. "Calteath" sounds very similar...

Mary's first marriage was possibly Warrington area which isn't too far away from Culceth... Shall try and dig out previous research on first marriage to "Burtonwood"
