This one is too late Sep 1899 W Derby John Balfe/Rose Dougherty.  This couple is on 1901/1911 census Liverpool.

1861 has a John Balfe born 1843, Ireland living in Bury.

I post this because of the Bury conection but no other clues.

This young man dies in 1867 aged 23 yrs and would then be too young to be Matthew's father.  The burial record offers no information.
Matthew's census record show Bury. He was living in Butterworth which is in Rochdale. I wonder if he gave Manchester because it was more recognisable but sadly, we will never know.
It just seems a strong coincidence that there is a John Balfe in Bury.
