SIMNETT 1851 Burton on Trent
« on: Tuesday 21 June 05 21:24 BST (UK) »
Please does anyone have access to an 1851 census index for Staffordshire ?

I have found part of a family in Piece 2012 folio 72 page 44 Schedule 176:
New Street, Burton on Trent
William Simnett aged 16, son, apprentice shoemaker, born in Burton
John Simnett aged 12, son, scholar at home, born in Burton

but I can't find their parents and younger brother anywhere in Piece 2012 :
John Simnett aged 48, born in Burton
Mary Simnett aged 50, wife, born in Burton
Samuel Simnett aged 9, son, born in Burton

I wondered if there is an 1851 name index for the Burton on Trent area, or if anyone is able to look them up.
Thank you in advance,
Amanda

Amanda
just a little piece of the jig saw which may or may not be relevent. I study the (Irish) Murrays of Burton on Trent who arrived circa 1851. I have info of one Simnett marrying one of my ancestors - I understand there were a number of Simnetts in Burton but these are the details

12 july 1872 Married in the Roman Catholic Chapel
Francis John Simnett age 22  Cooper in Brewery married
Anne Agnes Murray aged 20 ( my great aunt)
Father of Francis Simnett was a Thomas Simnett
they lived at 125 NEW Street BOT
The Murrays lived at 36 New Street

May or may not help
Bill

Bill, Thank you very much for your information.
I have just managed to find the missing parents and younger son today on the 1851 census at a well-known genealogy website ! They were in Ashby de la Zouch. I never would have thought of looking for them there.
I have yet to find out about other family members so I don't know if our Simnetts are related. I will keep a note of your information.
Thanks again.
Kind regards,
Amanda.

Dear Amanda,

I wonder if this John SIMNETT is the same one who was a photographer in Burton on Trent from about 1870 until the 1880s, after which his son John S. SIMNETT took over the business, and continued to run the studio in Burton until at least 1940?

If so, then please contact me by email, as I am compiling a profile of this photographer for my web site - see link below - and would be grateful to hear of anything further you might have about his life.

Regards and best wishes,
