Petts family - Derbyshire - William son of George Petts and Mary Barker
« on: Thursday 20 February 14 05:40 GMT (UK) »
My great great grandfather, William Petts, was transported to Australia in 1837 for stealing household items from Lea.  He was sentenced at the Derby Assizes. His original sentence was death, but this was commuted to 7 years transportation.  However, he was never able to return home.  He arrived aboard the Lord Lyndoch on 8th August 1838.  He was about 21 on arrival.

I believe that his father George Petts was a game keeper at Alderwasley, near Belper and was killed in 1821.  His mother Mary (Barker) Petts had two younger children.

I believe he was married with a female child whom he never saw again - if there is any more information about his wife and child (whose names I don't know).

I would like to know more about his father George - what other information there is about him and his death and also anything about his mother Mary's life after the death of George - and when she died.

I disagree that Daniel died 1866 in Yorkshire;

1841 Census, under PELLS
Bull Bridge, Crich,
Barrow Upon Trent, Derbyshire
HO107/188/9/Barrow Upon Trent
Daniel PETTS, 70, Farmer
Sarah Petts, 70
DANIEL Petts, 20, Stonemason

1851 Census Daniel Petts Snr is born c 1770, Crich, a Widower, Occp Coal Higler
Possible Burial, 11 March 1859, Crich (F/S.Org)

Daniel Jnr;
1851 he is in Crich, Married to Mary and with Children;
Ann 4, Martha 3 and Eliza FOX age 17
Marriage on FreeBMD for Daniel 1845 with a Mary FOX as possible Spouse

1861 he is in Snenton, Nottinghamshire;
Daniel 41, Mary 40, Ann 15, Martha 13
1871 still in Snenton under BETTS;
Daniel 51, Mary, 50, Martha 23, Daniel 3
1881 back in Derbyshire under LETTS;
Daniel 61, Mary 60, Daniel 13 (Daniel is now a Grandson so possibly Daug Marthas Son)
1891 Daniel is age 71 in Crich
He is a Stone Mason or Mason in all Census

Looks to me that Daniell/Sarah are Daniel 1821's Grandparents and likely Parents of his Father George :)

I did find a William Petts age 13 living with a William & Hannah BLOUNT in 1841 Derbyshire

William Blount married Hannah PETTS  30 Mar 1835 Matlock Derby, both single

Modified my post and added

This info. is  from one of the public trees on ancestry

GRO Certificate -
Daniel Petts to Mary Fox both of Greenhill Lane, Alfreton -
Fathers George Petts Gamekeeper
John Fox, Labourer -
Witnesses  William Blount & Hannah Blount
(Hannah Petts married William Blount 30 March 1835)

So Hannah Petts is probably Daniel's sister

Just trying to find my way around Rootschat so bear with me.

I think the William Petts born/baptised in 1817 in Belper is the right one.  I didn't know his father's baptismal date before, so thanks to everyone.  If his parents were married on 19th February 1816, then he could have been born later that year.

On a recent trip to the UK, I found an entry in the Derby Mercury for April 25th, 1821 which said that an inquest had been held at the Bulls Head public house at Belper Lane End on the body of a man named Petts, a game keeper from Alderwasley (for F. Hurt).  It said that "he had shot at a rabbit which ran into a hole, and as he was attempting to follow it, a large stone came down on his head, and crushed it in so dreadful a manner, that he died immediately."

I tried to look further, went out to Belper Lane End, found the pub, and also drove through Alderwasley.  I discovered that records weren't kept of inquests, but on an idle search of Rootschat (I think), I discovered that claims for coroner's expenses have survived and that one said: "For the same at Alderwasley ?? of the body of George Petts accidentally killed by a stone following a poacher".  Dated April 6, 1821 claim of £1.9.0.  I was unable to find anything else out.  If anyone can take me further I would appreciate it very much.  One of my relatives believes that George was murdered by the poacher, but I just don't know.  I guess it's possible.

I don't know where someone got the information that William had 4 children by each of his wives in Australia.  I think he had 3 by each.  I'm descended from his second marriage to Mary Trethowan.

If his parents were married on 19th February 1816

Date of the marriage for George & Mary seems to have come from familysearch
