1861 census lookup - St Lukes
« on: Wednesday 14 July 04 16:12 BST (UK) »
Hi I wonder if anyone can look something up for me...

Im trying to find Richard William Leage and his wife Caroline Amelia (born c1829-1831?)...they would have at least two children: Caroline E (born 1857?) and Alfred (born 1858) both born St Lukes.

Thanks for any help you can give  ;)

Thank you so much Cougar and JoyceS!

I dont have my info with me today to check to see if this could be right family. I know there was in fact another Richard William Leage who lived in the Islington area...this has confused me as the Caroline seems likely but how can RW be a widower...(sorry confused rhetorical question)...

Hi Meriel
Think you have read that wrongly - Richard W does not mean widow/er W is the first initial of his second name  eg William/Walter - that does that solve that problem for you?

Hello there

I've just joined the 'club' and trawling through the London postings to get an idea of what's on here and what you can discover. My family searchings are centred on the St Lukes district too, and just two things may be of interest to you - maybe not!

1. King Street, near St Luke's church was renamed Leage Street around 1900, possibly a connection with your estate agent Richard?

2. Dawsons was the name of a department store in City Road, which lasted till the 1960s.

Just offloaded two bits of trivia - makes for a bit more room upstairs!

Finn (Surrey & Walworth, London),  Murfitt (Newington, Surrey/London), Banbury or Bambury (St Lukes, Middx/London), Newman (London City), Lane (St Giles, Middx/London),  Cooper (Lambeth, Surrey), Kellert (London, Poland/Russia)

That is very interesting John  regarding Leage Street and Dawsons department store. I will have to investigate! Thank you very much!
