Hi im new here  and also relatively new at researching my family tree. Have found quite a bit of information on trove and state bdms but we are stuck on a number of lines. Here goes - our gggfather william henry smith c1831 prob england-no shipping records- spent time in victoria - ?married louisa rebecca elrington ,?had 1 or 2 children before going to NZ , i have found 7 children born there 1864-1878 with 1 death. 2 of the children have elrington as their middle names although spelt incorrectly-ebrington/elvington. What is bugging me is 2children have assender being, HENRY JOSEPH ASSENDER SMITH 1865 and ELIZA ASSENDER SMITH. where does assender come from? We know Eliza married and lived in NSW and Henry supposedly married MARGARET ANN SMYTH(cant find a marriage or anything about her either) and lived  in WA . We think they lived in the Otago area and one of them Benjamin stayed in NZ while the rest came to Perth sometime prior to William Henry dying in 1899. So where does Assender come from and also Louisa Rebecca Elrington - we ?think she was the one on the Navarino to SA , she was recorded as being from Guernsey, we have found her on the census-if it is her- how would we know? There was also a Tamson Elrington and a Lucy at the same address in St Peters Port , 1841. I hope that makes some sense- and thankyou

Hi Molly_P,

If you purchase a copy of the SMITH/ELRINGTON marriage certificate it will give you their ages, places of birth and parents' names, including mothers' maiden surnames.  You can then look for them on census records if they were born in the UK.  Images of historical certificates can be downloaded from the Vic BDM website once you have paid.  http://www.bdm.vic.gov.au/home/family+history/family+history+certificates/  (Choose "uncertified images")

If you list their known children with their dates of birth and where you think they lived we can try to help track them down

People give their children unusual middle names for lots of different reasons.  My lot did not only use family names but also surnames of friends, commanding officers in the military, ships and places.  As you continue your search the meaning behind the ASSENDER name will probably come to light.

Debra  :)

The 1851 census shows that Tamson was Louisa's mother (stated to be married though no husband in sight either in 1841 or 1851) and Louisa had two sisters, Lucy and Lydia, all 3 girls born in England, though I can't see a birth/baptism record for any of them  ???
